The R&D process Creating a product that’s 100 per cent authentic in terms of art and craft, the material and techniques used and the employment of skilled artisans is a huge challenge, which is the reason only a handful of companies are doing well. Books, magazines, exhibitions and research papers on ancient Indian heritage are good sources of information, but the true understanding of the Indian art resides with its artisans. “And there is no better way to research than to work with them (artisans) directly in their traditional environment,” says Chaudhary. Around 40,000 artisans and weavers are associated with Jaipur Rugs that carry with them an ocean of knowledge about ancient Indian philosophies. “The art of carpet weaving has been passed down from generation to generation and while working with these artisans as fellow designers, one gets to learn a variety of Indian traditional art forms first hand,” he adds. Kulkarni invests a lot of time and energy in the overall research and development. The teamworks closely to conceptualise the product, researching traditional formulations from ancient Ayurvedic texts and then revisiting the recipes to make them relevant for modern use. To retain the genuineness of all the products, Forest Essentials does it all in-house—from R&D to the sourcing of ingredients, the manufacturing, and then finally the sales. “We do not outsource these functions to maintain quality and consistency,” she says. Even with a dedicated team for research and development, making and selling such impressive products come with a lot of responsibilities. “Indian heritage has values greater than any other heritage across the globe. As representatives of the same, we always make sure that we craft pieces that speak volumes about the Indian heritage and the craftsmanship that has prevailed over generations,” says Raniwala. “I believe that authenticity is the most vital responsibility of any brand representing Indian heritage,” says Chaudhary. He thinks that doing justice to the rich crafts and traditions by maintaining extraordinary quality and connecting the artisans directly with the world is also paramount for a brand that promises a true Indian heritage experience. We live in a world of artificial intelligence and virtual reality. A majority of global brands ride high on these new-age technologies and produce and sell products that are modern, trendy, factory-made and chic. There are, however, a few that focus on heritage — be it the intricate minakari jewellery, organic Ayurvedic products, handwoven rugs, handmade artefacts and sarees woven traditionally. However, there is also a lot of confusion about what is truly good for the body and skin,” says Kulkarni. Forest Essentials’ products are made in the Himalayas, in villages in Uttarakhand, and the ingredients are sourced from various parts of India. “From our organically grown cold-pressed oils, our raw and unprocessed cane sugar to our steam distilled pure essential oils; everything is made in the traditional, old- fashioned way, according to Ayurvedic tenets, and wherever possible, by hand,” she adds. The brand’s storytelling is of true stories, which has always worked for it. “We have created a perfect blend of traditional Indian values and the millennial modern Indian style. We make jewellery that connects everyone, which is timeless and passed down generations,” says Raniwala. The jeweller says that the brand is always innovating its collections.
