Rooshad Shroff The homage paid to technique and craft is of paramount importance to this awardwinning Mumbai-born architect who received his undergraduate degree at Cornell University in 2006. As a student, his graduating thesis was exhibited in the Emerging Talents division of the Emerging Technologies Exhibit at the Beijing Architecture Biennial in 2006, and his work at the Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (where he did his Master’s in 2011) was exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010. While studying, Rooshad also gained work experience at the offices of internationallyacclaimed architects OMA/REX (New York) and Zaha Hadid Architects (London). When he returned home for a month in 2011, opportunity knocked – and he ended up establishing his practice in Mumbai, swiftly becoming a fixture in the city’s design circles. Rooshad’s passion for craftsmanship has made him synonymous with exclusivity and highluxury with a focus on craft and artisanry of Indian origin. Across his portfolio – whether architecture, interiors or bespoke furniture – he champions the cause and romantic appeal of the handmade, investing time and effort into research and experimentation with centuriesold techniques. His success story is a lesson in perseverance… for as a student of architecture in Mumbai, a college tutor with a personal axe to grind had tried to fail him out of malice. Principal Architect, Rooshad Shroff Architecture + Design “Time is luxury and vice versa – so when you translate that equation into the tangibility afforded by design, it emerges as a piece that takes time to create” Sahiba’s interest in design was shaped by a blend of passion and academic exploration. Her childhood years were marked by drawing and doodling, as her professor mother would often place her at a desk with paper and pens while she attended to her work. This laid the foundation for Sahiba’s creative skills, which were nurtured by her supportive parents. Her formal journey began with a B.Arch from Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture in Mumbai. During her final year (2011-12), Sahiba conducted a significant research project on India’s traditional building crafts, which involved hand-illustrating a series of postcards. This project not only documented these traditional crafts, but also ignited a deeper interest in the intersection of cultural heritage and design - leading to the founding of Kalakaari Haath in 2014. After completing her degree, Sahiba spent nearly three years working at leading design firms like Studio LAB and Abraham John Architects, where she honed her skills in architecture and interior design. During this period, she explored the idea of integrating her illustration work more seriously into her career. She freelanced on weekends - but when it became clear that she could no longer manage both, she decided to commit to her passion for illustration and design. And so, in 2019, she began her dual venture.
