Rabanne debuted a 18 karat gold bag on the runway!
September has been the most exciting month with the world of fashion being abuzz in light of fashion weeks. Setting the stage for the upcoming season (and year) trends were decoded, and fashion houses got innovative with their presentation. However, there was a standout accessory that has been highly spoken about. Yes, Rabanne returned to the runway and debuted the most expensive bag – the 18 karat gold bag! While there was chatter about the expected debut, few could truly grasp the scale of the extravagant creation until it appeared live on the runway. Priced at an astonishing $279,000 it was a moment reinforcing Rabanne’s reputation for pushing the boundaries of luxury and signalling the decline of quiet luxury in favour of bold opulence.

The Spring/Summer 2025 collection itself was a tribute to the late French style icon and singer Françoise Madeleine Hardy, renowned for popularising Rabanne’s distinctive chainmail designs, including their iconic shoulder bag. Amidst the futuristic and avant-garde silhouettes, the highlight was undoubtedly the world’s most expensive bag, an homage to the world’s most expensive dress. Back in 1968, Paco Rabanne created a gown for Hardy, made of gold and diamonds, a piece consisting of 1,000 joined gold plaques weighing a staggering 83 lbs, topped with a collar adorned with 300 carats of diamonds. This modern handbag now follows in those opulent footsteps.

Since its founding in 1966, Rabanne has been celebrated for its space-age, forward-thinking creations, often utilising unconventional materials such as metal, plastic, paper, and, of course, gold. Therefore, the reimagined 2024 gold bag is a natural evolution for the house. This updated version of Rabanne’s iconic 1969 Nano bag, now under the creative direction of Julien Dossena, is a striking piece made entirely of 18-karat gold. Known for its signature chainmail exterior, the original design boasted 282 interlinked discs and a metal chain strap. However, French jeweller Arthus-Bertrand has elevated this concept by assembling 371 of their signature Shower of Stars medallions, creating a golden chainmail purse that took 100 painstaking hours to handcraft, with each disc carefully linked together.
The 2024 collection introduced a trio of Nano bags, all inspired by the original 1969 model but crafted from various novel materials by expert artisans. One bag is made from fired white ceramic by Astier de Villatte, while another is constructed from blown glass by Murano’s renowned Venini. “These were truly exceptional pieces to work with,” said Creative Director Julien Dossena. These remarkable bags will be available for purchase at Rabanne’s Paris boutique following the show.

On the runway, the 18-karat gold bag was styled to perfection, accompanied by a radiant mini dress, metallic pointed-toe heels, and a pendant necklace, showcasing Rabanne’s signature chainmail aesthetic. The look blended modern glamour with timeless elegance, showing that in the world of high fashion, gold’s supremacy remains uncontested. Rabanne’s latest creation reinforces one clear message: in luxury, gold is eternal.
After a notable absence from the high-fashion circuit, Rabanne’s return to Fashion Week feels like a bold statement. In an era where many fashion houses have embraced subtlety, Rabanne’s unapologetically extravagant debut of the 18-karat gold bag is a refreshing contrast.
