The new Mercedes Benz G-Class is an ode to the 80’s classics
Take a walk back to the 80s with Mercedes-Benz’s newest SUV addition, the G-Class Edition Stronger Than the 1980s. Taking inspiration from the past, it boasts a boxy style inspired by a one-off built to mark the 500,000th example of the boxy SUV. Who could have ever thought the 1979 boxy SUV would be a mainstay? Now, 35 years later, the automaker brings the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition Stronger Than the 1980 limited to 460 examples.

Looking at the car from the outside, one can instantly think of the 1986 280 GE, the version of the 4×4. While the design is based on the G550, keeping in sync with the retro theme, it is available in a trio of Agave Green, Colorado Beige, and, simply, Cream. No matter which you pick, however, the G-Class Edition Stronger Than the 1980s boasts a blacked-out front fascia and old-school amber turn signals mounted high over the headlamps to set it apart from other G550S clad in similar shades. But that’s not all that refers to the past. It has 18-inch wheels with a traditional five-spoke design that provide a home for standard all-terrain tires and sit alongside mud flaps, while versions painted in Kermit the Frog’s favourite shade also boast a roof rack.

On the inside, it is one of the coolest features plaid Dove Grey fabric covers the seat inserts instead of the usual leather. There are also a handful of new badges and commemorative decorations scattered about, ranging from the subtle number plate on the centre console to the less-subtle Stronger Than the 1980s wording embossed on the grab handle in contrasting trim and the centre console has “1 of 460” lettering right behind the trackpad, referring to the model’s exclusivity. The list of features comprises a duo of 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment system and instrument cluster, a sunroof, a Burmester 3d surround sound system, and more.

Mercedes-Benz says the 1980s-inspired G-Class will be reaching American showrooms later this year. Pricing has not been announced, but you can expect the price to be more than the G 550, which starts at $148,250. It is currently unconfirmed if any of those units will make it to India.
