Rahul Mishra Debuts His Architectural Project ‘Aatman’ in the Himalayas

In the quiet ridgelines of Uttarakhand, at about 6,000 feet above sea level, Rahul Mishra has built something far removed from the runways of Paris. This is Aatman- Mishra’s debut architectural project, a mountain residence that reimagines what it means to live beautifully and responsibly in one of the Himalayas’ most fragile eco-zones. It also marks the launch of Rahul Mishra Spaces, a design-led extension of his brand where couture’s philosophy of craft, patience, and permanence finds new expression in architecture.

Much like his collections, Aatman is the product of a deeply participatory process. Built entirely by hand, without the felling of a single tree or the blasting of rock, the residence follows the contours of its fragile Himalayan site. Every door, staircase, and piece of furniture was crafted on location by local artisans, extending Mishra’s belief that design must create livelihoods, dignity, and cultural continuity alongside beauty. As you step inside, walls echo couture embroideries and interiors bear the imprint of their makers.

Designed on passive house principles, Aatman eliminates the need for air-conditioning or heating. Its 99° east orientation captures daylight, while thermal chimneys and cross-ventilation ensure year-round comfort. The home opens itself to nature, its glass walls framing the forest as both backdrop and constant presence. Powered entirely by solar energy, the home generates three times the electricity it consumes, shares its surplus with neighbouring houses, recycles every drop of rainwater, and transforms waste into nourishment for orchards and gardens that feed the household.

“This is luxury that gives back,” Mishra explains. “A house that sustains itself and nourishes everything around it. Aatman is couture translated into living.”

As both prototype and philosophy, Aatman reframes luxury as regenerative, proposing a future where architecture belongs to the land as much as to its inhabitants. From Paris ateliers to Himalayan ridgelines, Rahul Mishra is here to not only shape how we dress, but also how we live!
