Barbie gets a Diwali ‘festive’ edition with Anita Dongre

Since its inception in 1959, Barbie has been inspiring young girls to explore their limitless potential. With a new iteration every season, young girls can’t wait to get their hands on it. After the success of the Barbie movie last year, conversations around inclusivity and representation have become even more pronounced. And now, in a historic move, Barbie has teamed up with Indian designer Anita Dongre for a special Diwali Barbie—a collaboration that is both timely and significant.

In 2024, Barbie gets a desi makeover this year, and quite frankly given Mattel’s inclusive approach, this was much-awaited! To bring to the limelight this first-of-its-kind collaboration, there was no one better suited than Indian couturier Anita Dongre.   Dongre is no stranger to the global stage. Renowned for her mastery in combining traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, she has become a name synonymous with elegance, sustainability, and empowerment. Her designs are rooted in India’s rich heritage, yet her contemporary touch makes them accessible to modern audiences. But what makes this particular iteration so special? It’s not that Barbie has never released an Indian doll. Well, the truth is the 2024 Diwali Barbie is an accurate representation of Indian culture as opposed to being just a symbol of tokenism. Moving away from what Barbie’s prototype should look like, Anita Dongre’s Barbie combines the elegance of traditional Indian design with Barbie’s global legacy.

Lalit Agarwal, Country Manager, Mattel India, aptly said, “We are dedicated to reflecting the stories young girls see in the world around them through Barbie, and we couldn’t be more honoured to partner with renowned Indian couturier Anita Dongre to create a doll that furthers this mission. Through the Barbie Diwali doll, Barbie is thrilled to showcase India’s vibrant cultural heritage on a global stage while continuing to celebrate the power and beauty of diversity.”

This Diwali doll shines in her finest Moonlight Bloom lehenga designed by Anita Dongre, featuring a choli top, floral Koti vest, and a lehenga skirt adorned with delicate motifs of dahlias, jasmine, and Indian lotus—symbols of strength and beauty. Dongre’s Diwali Barbie doesn’t feel like a caricature but rather a well-rounded representation of the modern Indian woman with the doll’s kohled eyes, jhumkas, and traditional attire. She finishes her look with a radiant bindi, golden bangles and earrings that dazzle in the light.  In essence, this doll embodies the grace and poise of the modern Indian woman. Anita Dongre herself expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying: “In celebration of Diwali, Barbie and I are both encouraging fans around the world to celebrate the beautiful heritage of Indian fashion and culture. My brand has always been driven by a mission to empower through fashion, and as the ultimate symbol of women empowerment, partnering with Barbie to create the Barbie Diwali doll couldn’t be a more perfect alignment of our values.”
