Did Samsung Just Drop the First-Ever Trifold Phone?

For years, Samsung has defined the foldable phone conversation. Now, the brand takes its most audacious leap yet with the debut of Galaxy Z TriFold, a device that reimagines what a phone can be. A device that looks like someone took the future, folded it twice, and put it in their pocket.

At just 3.9 mm at its thinnest, it preserves the sleekness of a premium phone while unfolding into an expansive tablet-like screen. When fully opened, the device transforms into a 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, ideal for productivity, multitasking, and immersive viewing. TM Roh, co-CEO and Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division calls it the perfect equilibrium between portability, performance, and capability, and it’s easy to see why.

Creating a phone that folds twice without ballooning in size required Samsung to rethink its hardware from scratch. The brand designed its most advanced hinge system yet, using two differently sized dual-rail hinges that work in sync to create a smooth, stable fold with minimal gaps. This innovation keeps the device deceptively thin despite its complex mechanics.

The display itself has been re-engineered for resilience. Samsung added a reinforced overcoat and a shock-absorbing layer beneath the 10-inch screen to withstand the unique stress points created by dual folds. On the exterior, materials like titanium hinge housing, Advanced Armor Aluminum framing, and a ceramic-glass fiber back panel ensure the device remains lightweight yet strong. To top it off, every unit is subjected to meticulous quality checks, including CT scans and laser inspections, ensuring internal components sit precisely where they’re meant to.

Flagship Power, Tripled

Beneath its folding architecture, the Galaxy Z TriFold is every bit a flagship performance machine. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy, packs a 200 MP wide-angle camera, and houses a 5600 mAh three-cell system distributed across each panel, Samsung’s largest foldable battery yet. Adding to it is 45W Super-Fast Charging 2.0 and configurations offering 16GB RAM with up to 1TB storage.

The TriFold’s most transformative strength lies in its productivity appeal. When fully unfolded, the screen behaves like three 6.5-inch smartphones laid out side by side, creating room to multitask with ease. You can run three apps simultaneously, resize windows on the fly, drag content across layouts, and access a bottom Taskbar that restores previous workspaces instantly. Apps like My Files and Samsung Health have also been redesigned to take advantage of the expanded real estate.

Standalone Samsung DeX adds another layer of utility. With up to four independent workspaces, each capable of running five apps, the device becomes a legit workstation. Paired with an external monitor via Extended Mode, or accessories like a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, the TriFold adapts seamlessly into a full desktop-like environment.

AI, Supercharged by Scale

With a canvas this large, Galaxy AI becomes significantly more intuitive. Generative Edit and Sketch-to-Image tools scale beautifully, offering spacious side-by-side comparisons of before-and-after edits. Browsing Assist upgrades the mobile web experience by delivering instant summaries and translations without switching apps. Meanwhile, Gemini Live takes contextual assistance even further; show it a room, a product, or an inspiration reference, and it can offer real-time recommendations. It understands speech, visuals, and on-screen context simultaneously, making multitasking feel almost conversational.

The Galaxy Z TriFold also doubles as a cinematic portable theater. The expansive 10-inch OLED screen enhances movies, shows, and content with vibrant colors and smooth 120 Hz refresh rates. With brightness levels reaching up to 2600 nits on the cover display and 1600 nits on the main display, the visuals remain sharp even in bright environments. The minimized crease visibility keeps content uninterrupted, and you can enjoy video-and-comment views on platforms like YouTube side-by-side. When the show ends? Fold it once, fold it again, and it disappears back into your pocket.

The Galaxy Z TriFold will first launch in Korea on December 12, 2025, followed by markets including China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UAE, and the U.S. Buyers will receive a 6-month trial of Google AI Pro, complete with Veo3-powered video generation and 2TB of secure cloud storage. Samsung is also offering an exclusive benefit; a one-time 50% discount on display repair costs, acknowledging the complexity of this cutting-edge form factor.

Will this be the next big shift in the world of smartphones?
