‘Kahaani Kathal Ki’: The Jackfruit festival at Chef Kunal Kapur’s Quarter Plate

Growing up with a vegetarian mother and grandmother, special occasions at home always meant one thing: ‘Kathal,’ popularly known as Jackfruit. Years later, the legacy of this beloved fruit remains as strong as ever. This love was recently rekindled at the Jackfruit Festival, curated and hosted by Chef Kunal Kapur at Quarter Plate. The Jackfruit Festival is a one-of-a-kind event that celebrates the versatility and unique flavors of this extraordinary fruit. From the meticulously crafted Kathal Galouti Kebab to the savory Kathal Nihari, I indulged in a specially curated menu that reimagines traditional Indian dishes with a creative flair, showcasing Chef Kapur’s culinary brilliance.

Kicking off our eagerly awaited culinary journey, we began with the Jackfruit Galouti, a tender and succulent dish served with a harmonious blend of sour cream, raw mango, and passion fruit chutney, perfectly balancing savory and sweet flavors. Following this delightful start, we indulged in the Jackfruit Seekh Kebab, a hearty option enhanced with the satisfying crunch of pistachios.

The adventure continued with a modern twist on Nihari, merging Indian and Middle Eastern influences. This dish features slow-cooked jackfruit paired with Zaatar sourdough Kulcha, offering a unique and flavorful spin on a classic favorite. Finally, the Jackfruit Tawa Pulao rounded off the menu with its vibrant and aromatic rice, cooked to perfection on a tawa and served with rich gravy and refreshing raita. This dish beautifully encapsulates the festival’s comfort food ethos, all with a delightful jackfruit twist.

Speaking about the Jackfruit festival and the idea behind it, Chef Kunal Kapur said, “Jackfruit is such an amazing ingredient, full of flavor and texture. This festival is an opportunity to showcase its versatility and create dishes that are both innovative and comforting.”

“As a chef, I see the Jackfruit Festival as a canvas for culinary artistry. It’s about crafting dishes that not only tantalize the taste buds but also tell a story of sustainability, diversity, and cultural richness. Let’s unlock the endless possibilities of jackfruit and invite guests on a journey of flavor discovery”, remarked Shivansh Bhasin, Head Chef at Quarter Plate by Chef Kunal Kapur.
