Can Ian Schrager’s Singapore Edition redefine luxury?

By: Akanksha Dean

Tucked away on the quieter side of Orchard Road, a rarity in itself, ‘The Singapore Edition’ is not here to shout. Instead, it draws you in with understated luxury, surprises with subtle, nature inspired design, and defines what it means to feel at home in elegance. It’s Ian Schrager’s first Southeast Asian foray, and, true to his legendary form, it’s a masterclass in polished playfulness. Luxe without the fuss. Stunning yet liveable. Let’s just say, this isn’t your typical five star.

Minimalism Meets Magic

Have you ever walked into a space so beautifully crafted it feels as if you’ve stepped into the pages of an architecture journal? That’s how I felt stepping into ‘The Singapore Edition’. The lobby? It’s a vision of minimalist grandeur. Imagine towering white walls curling like a Grecian temple and that gold leafed dome gleaming above like a celestial wink. Beneath it, a staircase spirals downward in textured Venetian plaster, part sculpture, part storyteller. Every corner here feels crafted for quiet drama. But Schrager doesn’t do minimalism for minimalism’s sake. Here, stark simplicity meets bursts of lush, tropical vibrancy. Take the conservatory, for instance. A glass walled Eden crowned with floating fern spheres (162, if you’re counting), they capture streams of golden sunlight like nature’s disco balls. From there, wander through to the sunken timber courtyard, a jungle-wrapped sanctuary that feels a million miles from Orchard Road’s bustle. And don’t even get me started on the rooftop pool. Suspended nine floors above the courtyard, its acrylic panel lets swimmers float above the world like a luxe Atlantis. Inside, The Edition is full of small seductive details.

The scent of Black Tea lingers in the air, subtle, smoky, and oddly reminiscent of a noir detective’s study. Glass crystal decanters at the Lobby Bar shine like gems from the Gatsby era, and the marble pool table with a hint of pink fuchsia felt practically challenges you to spoil its beauty with a game. This isn’t just a hotel lobby, it’s a swanky cocktail party waiting to happen.

Redefining Luxury

And the rooms? They’re Schrager at his best, refined yet inviting. My Garden Premier King had floor to ceiling windows framing the green courtyard below. The neutral, earthy tones, complemented by plush upholstered chairs and a bed that felt like a dream dipped in cashmere, made me want to lounge around all day. Even the blackout shades moved silently and smoothly, enclosing me in a peaceful cocoon and blocking out the noise of Orchard Road. But let’s talk about the welcome. Awaiting on the table was not just a chocolate amenity, it was edible art, a sculpture modelled after a nearby Botanic Gardens masterpiece.

Imagine intricately twirling vines of chocolate, studded with vibrant edible butterflies. It was the kind of showpiece that begged the question, ‘Am I meant to eat this or frame it?’ Naturally, I did both, savoured it first, guilty, then immortalised it on Instagram. And then there’s ‘Fysh’, the star of The Edition’s culinary line up. Velvet forest green banquettes and Calacatta marble tables set the stage for an all sensory dining affair. Their standout dishes? Fish head curry croquettes, the crispiest onion rings to ever meet batter, and a perfectly charred Hanger Steak. I paired it with a ‘Shiso Leaf cocktail’, a herbaceous, slightly sweet surprise that tasted like nature rewritten in a glass. Even the Lobby Bar’s drink menu was an experience, like perfume bottles in cocktail form, curated to intrigue. For deeper indulgence, the spa ‘sealed the deal’. Between thermal pools, an ice fountain, and aromatic steam rooms, I found my haven. The Edition Signature Massage, think fluid Swedish strokes combined with Le Labo’s dreamy Black Tea oils, transcended pampering; it was alchemy. Of course, I spent an inevitable afternoon by the rooftop pool, feeling both intimidated and empowered by its suspended transparency. Few spaces in the city capture nature and urbanity coexisting so seamlessly. It’s Schrager’s genius, he creates spaces that feel chic yet profoundly human.

To Sum It Up

The Singapore Edition isn’t just a place to stay, it’s a mood, a well-tailored paradox of conscious luxury and rebellious charm. This is a hotel for the in crowd, designers who dream in patterns, musicians who compose to chaos, and art aficionados who unravel concepts like riddles. Families are welcome too, though even the kids seem suspiciously cool here. Sustainability is its silent flex. Bamboo key cards, boxed water, and recycled everything. The Garden King rooms? Accessibility meets aesthetics, roll in showers, levered handles, thoughtful without screaming ‘clinical. But what hooked me wasn’t just the eco patina or design mastery, it’s the intrigue. Shadowy art, coy details, it feels like a scavenger hunt you didn’t know you were on.
