New in town: Comfort food at Bizza by Bastian in Mumbai

One of the prominent restaurant chains in India, Bastian Hospitality has a brand new entrant. Comfort food has been at the heart of Bastian Hospitality since its inception, and after its successful sister restaurant, Binge by Bastian, the chain has now taken the beloved cuisine, pizzas and given it an artisanal touch.

Charming interiors
Located in the busy streets of Linking Road in Bandra, among tiny shoe shops and crowded stores, Bizza sits in a quaint corner that lights up at night. From the moment you step in, the restaurant’s chic yet relaxed and charming vibe transports you to a sun-kissed Mediterranean vacation spot. The interiors display a vibrant aesthetic with white walls, natural lighting and colourful decor. Elements like the faux lemon tree in the centre of the room, decorative pots and vases sourced from across the globe, and decorative glazed plates in cheery shades of blue, yellow and red, hanging on the walls create a cosy, colourful ambience. Printed cushions bring pops of colour to the neutral upholstery. The chic interior were designed by Founder & CEO Ranjeet Bindra along with Minal Chopra.

Pizzas and more
The delicious menu at Bizza was specially curated by Chef Danniel Punzo and his team. While the menu highlights the best of artisanal pizzas, the menu stretches across an abundance of lip-smacking plates.
Burrata Salad
My dinner date and I began our meal with the much-loved Burrata salad. Fresh greens, crunchy nuts along with a rich and creamy burrata, layered with a rustic pesto dressing was the perfect start to an indulgent meal. Non-buratta lovers can try out classics like the corn salad with mixed green lettuce, feta cheese, crispy quinoa, cashew nuts and roasted lemon miso dressing, or the romaine hearts made with an antique mustard dressing, heirloom cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, and candied walnuts.
Pepperoni Pizza
Pepperoni Pizza
The heart of Bizza’s menu is its selection of artisanal pizzas. Offering a wide range of pizzas, the menu includes options like miso aubergine & blue cheese, spicy cauliflower, truffle & tuna,  jalapeno prawns, peking duck and bolognese pizza, among many others. These come with a range of dipping sauces such as spicy fermented sauce, Argentinian chimichurri, garlic & truffle cream, and yellow Peruvian aji, to help elevate the flavour palate.

My dinner date and I went without server Urmi’s suggestion, opting for a classic pepperoni and a chorizo pizza. With an equal amount of greasy deliciousness, both pizzas were a hearty treat, perfect for a late-night (or early-morning) binge!
Each of Bastian Hospitality’s restaurants has always laid emphasis on its bar program, and at Bizza, this is no different. The fun and eclectic menu presents a range of playful and beautifully crafted cocktails. Selecting a vodka base, I opted for a Nutty Professor, a cream-washed vodka cocktail with amaretto liqueur, berry compote, and berry bitters topped off with a homemade coffee foam. The sweetness from the berries combined with the tartness of vodka and the aromatics of coffee were a tricky but successful curation. My date on the other hand went for a refreshing Popped Melon. Peanut butter washed whisky stirred with watermelon and raspberries, the cocktail was served with a watermelon popsicle, a fun addition more preferred for the summer seasons.

While digging into our pizzas, we also tried out the much-hyped freak shakes, going for a hazelnut-flavoured The Rocher freak shake. Loaded with chocolate mousse, profiteroles, a brownie and chocolate cream, the freak shake was a meal on its own, a rather heavy but decadent one. After struggling with the shake for more than 30 minutes, my dinner companion and I finally managed to make it more than halfway through the shake before giving up, realising that this glass of decadence is better made for hardcore dessert enthusiasts.

And while the shake represented dessert-like elements, it wasn’t dessert (apparently!). Encouraged by Urmi, we decided to try out a dessert, because why not. The dessert menu, despite my fully filled belly, was a treat to my eyes. Created by Executive Pastry Chef Shreya Agarwal, the menu includes the best of decadent, delicious, slightly unsusal but highly-Instagrammable desserts. These include the likes of the Emoji Cake, a soft vanilla chiffon cake layered with a French vanilla mousse, sea salt caramel, almond brittle, covered with a light vanilla buttercream; Vegan Mini Magnums which are an assortment of 4 dairy-free, gluten-free, refined sugar-free and egg-free mini magnums in dark chocolate, raspberry, passionfruit and strawberry flavours a Bizza-misu, tiramisu done the Bizza way, and many more.

My plus one and I decided to settle for one of the many hearty treats in the form of a sticky date pudding. Classically rich and sweet, the pudding was also light and well-balanced, making it the perfect close to a rather fulfilling meal.
