In Conversation with Malaika Arora, At the Launch of Sweeney Khar

Mumbai’s dining scene welcomes a thoughtful new entrant with the arrival of Sweeney, a restaurant imagined as a home for Thai and European cuisine, rediscovered, refined, and quietly reimagined. Helmed by Malaika Arora and restaurateur Dhaval Udeshi, Sweeney has been months in the making. What began as research, return visits, and time spent in kitchens that rarely call themselves restaurants has evolved into a deeply personal culinary address rooted in memory and lived experience.

At Sweeney, home is not an aesthetic. It is the starting point. From Southern and Northern Thai households, where coconut rich curries, fermented pastes, fresh herbs and shared rice bowls define the rhythm of a meal, to Italian domestic kitchens where sauces simmer slowly and generosity is instinctive, the menu reflects immersion rather than imitation. Subtle French refinement and gentle Mexican warmth layer the experience without overpowering it. The result is food shaped by repetition and preservation. You can savour curries built for sharing, herb laced grills, rice led plates, and handmade comforting pastas for the soul.

Sharing her vision, Malaika Arora says, “Sweeney is the taste of comfort. The flavours I return to wherever I am in the world. It is a second home that feels warm, instinctive and lived in, where you arrive hungry, stay longer than planned and leave feeling quietly looked after.”

Dhaval Udeshi adds, “Sweeney was built through research and return. It preserves what deserves protection while actively building the next generation of talent.”

The bar programme, led by Beverage Director Fay Barretto, functions as a women-led platform and exchange initiative, anchored in modern classics, discipline and precision. If the kitchen looks to inheritance, the bar looks forward, nurturing craft in real time behind the counter.

The interiors echo this philosophy. Sage green tones, layered natural textures, warm shifting light and intimate dining pockets unfold into a seamless alfresco extension.

In Conversation with Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora joins us at Sweeney Khar for an intimate conversation on Mumbai’s 2026 dining scene, indulgent cheat meals, tequila cocktails, and what makes a restaurant unforgettable.

LuxeBook: What excites you the most about Mumbai’s evolving dining culture?

Malaika Arora: The world is smaller now. People are well travelled, social media has opened up perspectives, and there’s a genuine hunger to explore flavours from everywhere. From farm to table philosophy to organic sourcing and a deeper understanding of ingredients, Mumbai is now home to some of the finest culinary talent anywhere. There is an informed diner, a confident chef, and a city that is no longer playing catch up but confidently setting trends. At Sweeney, that global yet rooted ethos is evident. Thai nuance meets European restraint, creating a menu that feels at once comforting and cosmopolitan.

LuxeBook: For someone synonymous with discipline and wellness, what does a cheat meal look like?

Malaika Arora: Cheese, without hesitation. Anything with truffle or feta. Sweet isn’t really my cheat because I have dark chocolate almost every day. But cheese? That’s indulgence. And then comes my undeniable weakness: mango sticky rice. A dish I once travelled to Thailand for, now temptingly available closer to home. The nostalgia, the richness, the perfect balance of coconut and fruit, it is indulgence wrapped in memory.

LuxeBook: Classic Martini or Experimental Mixology, what’s your pick?

Malaika Arora: I like something a little spicy. At Sweeney, my pick is the tamarind spritz for its subtle Thai inflection. But if I have to name a signature favourite, it is the picante. Tequila, spice, citrus, and that unmistakable kick.
