When it comes to single malts, it’s always “the older, the better”, and Scotch distillery, The Macallan is a testament to this. Over the years, the Macallan has released some of the finest and the oldest whiskies ever. Adding to their spectacular The Red Collection, the distillery unveiled a 77-year-old aged single malt which is the first high-aged guest release in the collection, priced at US $87,000.
The Red Collection
The Macallan’s Red Collection comprises of an exquisite range of rare, distinguished single malts. Each bottle in the collection bears a rich red hue that defines the liquor, reflecting its growth and excellence since it first started in 1824. The colour red also reflects key flavour notes of dried red fruits, sweet woodsmoke and traditional flavours of cherry bakewell (an English sweet tart). Among the Red Collection, The Macallan 40 Years Old, The Macallan 50 Years Old and The Macallan 60 Years Old remain the most prominent.

The new 77-year-old single malt was distilled back in 1945 at 43.3 per cent ABV, in the distillery’s signature small copper stills until it was left to rest in hand-picked oak casks for the next seven decades. According to Macallan, “the carefully selected wood shaped the unique character of the whisky delivering the natural colour, distinctive aromas and full flavours of this aged single malt.”
Celebrating Macallan
In celebration of the launch of the new single malt, The Macallan collaborated with renowned Spanish painter and artist Javi Aznarez to create an animated film along with a collection of illustrations to show the transition of the Red Collection from the past to the present. The illustration culminates with a moment of celebration at The Macallan Bar, located in the heart of The Macallan Distillery in Speyside, Scotland.
