It’s cool to be sustainable: Galeries Lafayette introduces ‘The New Cool’ for sustainable fashion

In a world where sustainability and environmental responsibility have become essential imperatives, Galeries Lafayette is positioning itself as pioneers of circular fashion with the launch of its flagship event: Le Nouveau Cool. This initiative coincides with Earth Day, emphasizing the urgent need for innovative solutions to combat climate change and reduce waste in the fashion industry. Galeries Lafayette’s commitment to circular fashion aligns perfectly with the spirit of Earth Day, as it strives to redefine the standards of fashion through sustainable practices.

The New Cool by Galeries Lafayette is all about shaping the future of fashion by supporting circular and more sustainable creation. According to a spokesperson for Galeries Lafayett, since the launch of Go for Good in 2018, Galeries Lafayette has been taking the lead in a community that’s rethinking the fundamentals of today’s creative talents.

During The New Cool, a creativity-meets-sustainability mantra will resonate both online and in stores, in Paris, throughout the network and on Revamp — Recycle — Repair — Resell. This is The New Cool! The way forward to a new era. Waiting to be experienced at Galeries Lafayette.

“Circularity is about restoring value – designing products with reuse in mind. At Galeries Lafayette, we believe that beautiful things should be taken care of, so they can be passed on and loved for longer,” says Karine Viel, Sustainable Development Director at Galeries Lafayette.

Karine Viel highlights the importance of circularity. “Circularity is about restoring value – designing products with reuse in mind. At Galeries Lafayette, we believe that beautiful things should be taken care of, so they can be passed on and loved for longer.” Located on the third floor of the main Paris Haussmann building, the (Re)Store, a space of more than 500m² offers a selection of unique, vintage, and second-hand pieces, as well as a more responsible fashion and lifestyle offering. Brands such as MaisonCléo, Âge Paris, Aud Rey, and Kabas present their creations there, all marked by the commitment to sustainability. Designers committed to the cause alongside Galeries Lafayette will be invited to talk about making fashion more circular and sustainable. The conversations will be hosted by stylist, art director, and Canal+ presenter Piu Piu.

Thanks to a pop-up offering garment repair, consignment sales, and personalised advice, The New Cool will travel around France spreading style – and circularity! The pop-up will be stationed at the Haussmann store in Paris from 19 to 21 April and then at the Strasbourg, Annecy, Nice Masséna, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Nantes stores. Highlights from the event include:

Refashion Workshops: Refashion – the extended producer responsibility (ERP) organisation for France’s textile and footwear industry – will host workshops led by industry professionals to teach customers how to repair their own clothes.

The Cool Crew: Galeries Lafayette is recruiting a Cool Crew of experts and social media content creators to offer customers a tailor-made style service. The Crew will provide personalized advice to help customers create their own unique look from second-hand items found in the [RE]STORE or the Jaiio selection.

Jaiio’s Consignment Service: French fashion resale platform Jaiio will offer a consignment service – a simple and convenient solution for adding a touch of chic to your wardrobe without generating waste.

By encouraging reuse, repair, and recycling, this event reaffirms the iconic department store’s commitment to a fashion industry that is more aware of its impact on the environment.
