The Original Birkin: From Airlines to Art, Sold for ₹85.7 Crore

Jane Birkin’s very first Hermès Birkin bag- the prototype sketched during a flight in the early ’80s- has shattered records again. At Sotheby’s Paris auction on July 10, 2025, the bag fetched a remarkable €7 million, which, with commissions, totaled €8.58 million; roughly ₹85.7 crore.

Time had softened its shape, stickers from UNICEF and Médecins du Monde still clinging to its surface. A small nail clipper hung from the strap, practical and personal. Not just pristine, but powerful; worn by life- not just luxury. A relic of utility turned icon, waiting to be claimed once more.

Originally designed in 1984 after Hermès executive Jean‑Louis Dumas sat next to Birkin on a Paris–London flight, the bag was sketched on an airsickness bag to meet her demand for something both chic and roomy enough for a young mother.

Unique to this prototype are seven bespoke design features like non‑removable shoulder strap, brass hardware, even an attached nail clipper; personal touches embodying Birkin’s effortlessly elegant, practical style.

The auction shattered the previous world records- the most expensive handbag before this was the White Himalaya Crocodile Kelly, which sold for approximately ₹4.3 crore (about $513,040)

Why This Bag Is “The Mona Lisa of Handbags”

Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s Head of Handbags, captured it best: this isn’t merely a bag- “it’s fashion’s Mona Lisa”. Its value stems from its provenance (Birkin’s own), one‑off craftsmanship, and cultural imprint. It’s a rare physical artefact where design, celebrity, and social history converge- modern ‘art’, one that you can carry.

Celebrity, & Collector Craze: Investment narrative

In India, this sale translates to ₹85.7 crore, immediately making international headlines. The Birkin bag has consistently demonstrated high returns- delivering a 14% CAGR between 1984 and 2015, compared with average returns of traditional assets. Its scarcity plays a huge role.

Even entry-level Birkins retail around ₹9 lakh, while exotic models and diamonds push prices into crore territory. A fancy one? Expect years on the Hermès waiting list- an experience shrouded in secrecy and exclusivity.

As Morgane Halimi, head of handbags at Sotheby’s, put it, “It’s a singular piece of fashion history.”

At a time when luxury narratives increasingly merge past, persona, and provenance, this sale illustrates how a single object: a tote sketched on an airsickness bag, can redefine fashion, finance, and culture across continents.

While most shoppers won’t queue for years to own a Birkin, the brand’s aura continues to inspire more accessible alternatives- and educate buyers on craftsmanship, heritage, and a value. beyond price.
