World Chocolate Day: All about Artisanal Chocolate

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”Charles M. Schulz

Much like a fine wine or single malt, every exceptional chocolate bar is shaped by its origin, terroir, craftsmanship and the people behind it. While chocolate has been savoured in India since a couple of centuries now, it is only recently that couverture chocolate became easily available within the country. LuxeBook spoke to the founders of India’s leading artisanal chocolate brands this World Chocolate Day. As discerning consumers seek authenticity over gold flake chocolate coins and fleeting gimmicks, India’s craft chocolatiers are redefining luxury from bean to bar, proving that true indulgence lies in exceptional craftsmanship rather than embellishment.

Luxury begins at the source

For today’s premium chocolate makers, the distinction starts long before the chocolate reaches the mould. Every step, from cacao cultivation and fermentation to roasting and refinement, shapes the final flavour profile.

At Manam Chocolate, founder Chaitanya Muppala believes great chocolate begins at origin, with close partnerships across Andhra Pradesh’s cacao-growing communities and a commitment to preserving the unique character of Indian beans. Likewise, Bon Fiction’s philosophy centres on controlling every stage of production, allowing the cacao itself to remain the hero while expressing India’s growing craft chocolate identity.

“We believe exceptional chocolate begins long before it reaches the factory”, says Chaitanya Muppala, Founder, Manam Chocolate

“We work with cacao from the tree up, not just from the bar backwards,” says Bon Fiction

Innovation: from bean to brilliant

A shared pursuit of quality, thoughtful experimentation and storytelling, proving that luxury lies as much in the journey as it does in the final bite. Unexpected flavours continue to define modern chocolate, but the country’s leading chocolatiers agree that innovation should never overshadow the cocoa itself.

For Bonfiction, experimentation does not mean adding something unusual for shock value. It starts with asking whether an ingredient can genuinely reveal a new side of the chocolate.

They look at flavour the way one might look at a story (an ode to literature really).

There is a central character, which is the cacao. Then there are supporting notes: fruit, spice, herbs, nuts, flowers, salt, bitterness, acidity, warmth or texture. The question is always: does this make the chocolate more interesting, more memorable, or more emotionally precise?  Many of their flavours come from Indian references, but we try not to use them in a predictable way. Mango, rose, pistachio, chilli, orange, cinnamon, coffee or herbs can all become very different when they are paired thoughtfully with single-origin dark chocolate. The aim is not novelty, it is to surprise with discipline intact.

Whether it’s SMOOR’s sushi inspired chocolates and podi flavoured cashews, Bon Fiction’s disciplined approach to pairing Indian ingredients with single origin chocolate, or Manam Chocolate’s exploration of regional produce and nostalgic flavours, experimentation is driven by balance rather than novelty.

“The aim is not novelty. The aim is surprise with discipline.” Bon Fiction

“The most successful flavour combinations are often the ones where the chocolate remains the hero.” Chef Ruby Islam, Head of Product and Innovation, Manam Chocolate

Packaging is part of the experience

Chaitanya Muppala, Founder, Manam Chocolate says, “Packaging is often the first interaction someone has with the brand, and it should reflect the same level of thought and craftsmanship that goes into the chocolate itself.”

“The packaging creates the first moment of imagination.” Bon Fiction

Beautiful packaging has become an extension of the product itself, especially in luxury gifting.

“Packaging absolutely plays a vital role in shaping the luxury experience,” Vimal Sharma, Founder and CEO, SMOOR

For SMOOR, packaging has always reflected the premium positioning of the brand, while Manam Chocolate treats every box as an extension of its storytelling through commissioned artwork inspired by India’s cacao landscapes. Bon Fiction, meanwhile, sees packaging as the first chapter in the chocolate’s narrative rather than an afterthought.

Chaitanya Muppala, Founder, Manam Chocolate says, “For us, luxury is about attention to detail, authenticity and creating a sense of anticipation.  Our current packaging commissioned by our branding agency Anomaly Brands features a specially commissioned artwork series of impressionist style illustrations by visual artist Namrata Kumar, whose works beautifully capture the rich biodiversity and natural landscapes surrounding India’s cacao-growing regions. The artwork go beyond being just decorative; it reflects our deep connection to origin and celebrates the ecosystems that make exceptional Indian cacao possible. With over 350 craft chocolate expressions across 50 plus categories from tablets, bonbons, palettes, clusters, barks, hot chocolate mixes to dessert boxes and savoury snacks – we design for diversity. The artwork is adapted across a wide range of formats. From gift tins, limited edition boxes, tablet boxes, small snack-selections etc., each sized so that some are centerpiece gifts, others smaller or shareable.”
