An abundance of pastels and bright colours, bohemian aesthetics and the richness of embroidery in every outfit, Ritu Kumar’s latest collection Rabaari is on par with current fashion trends. A renowned textile revivalist and a veteran designer many look up to, Ritu Kumar has always led the way for Indian heirloom and indigenous craftsmanship.
Looking back at the label’s past collections, one would agree, that the Indian culture has often been the building block for Kumar’s ensembles. And, for Spring/Summer 2020, inspired by the South Asian heritage, she introduces an elegant line of clothing for the Rabaari women.
Rabaari is a pastoral community in the north-west part of India, and the women of this tribe are experts in exquiste craftwork. Their age-old art and the evolving heirloom tradition has been narrated with a twist of contemporary silhouettes and prints in the S/S’20 collection. The interesting intermix of India’s rural and urban style philosophy takes centrestage with a diverse palette of colours plays with nature-inspired motif detailings and catchy patterns rendered on the locally sourced fabric such as cotton, slub and chanderi.
One would find these pieces worthy of creating an entire wardrobe from scratch; think reinvented kurta dresses, solid kurtas, crafty tops and everyday essentials, printed bottoms and classic suit sets. Not only for work and casual outings, Rabaari makes for a perfect, comfortable work-from-home collection as well.
The earthy, free-spirited aesthetic is highlighted with diffused butties, radical florals, bead and mirror work, macramé elements, quilting and kaleidoscopic paisleys. Among all these, the tone-on-tone designs add a touch of sophistication and timelessness one would love to style in during summer.
