For every one of us, Christmas may be the happiest season of the year. However, it’s also one of the most polluting times of year, with a rise in the amount of waste created and disposed of.
We frequently eat out and attend parties throughout the holiday season to celebrate. We send Christmas cards to everyone we know and can spend excessive amounts of money on gifts for friends and family. Stores seduce us with offers, luring us to purchase gleaming new presents, home decor, and holiday goodies presented in opulent-appearing packaging. Unfortunately, a large portion of all decor is single-use and gets disposed of in landfills, harming the environment. Christmas is a time of tradition and celebration, so it should come as no surprise that each year a significant amount of waste is generated. So, here’s how you can make this festive season, as Andy Williams says, the most wonderful time of the year and not the most wasteful one.

The easiest way to make this happen is for us to obviously stop purchasing products that would be harmful to the environment. Instead of buying gift wrapping paper, save your old newspapers or buy some recycled parcel paper and artfully wrap it with twine and some holly leaves. This season also try making your own Christmas décor. Make origami or twig stars or use some dehydrated orange slices for a rustic garland. But, if you don’t have the knack for arts and crafts, then fear not as we have a curated a list of online stores where you can purchase beautifully handcrafted sustainable décor.
