New York Fashion Week just wrapped another season and as the fashion buzz makes its way to London, let’s take a recap of all the accessory trends for 2023 spotted at the NYFW. From mirrored handbags and inflated sunglasses to the MSCHF’s big red boots, carry-all tote bags, and statement baubles were seemingly agreed upon must-haves across the shows.
Carry-all tote bags
Goodbye, micro-minis! Say hello to the biggest of bags. It’s time to store away your micro-mini bag for everyday wear as tote bags are making a comeback in a big way. While oversized proportions are still having their runway moment, we’re starting to also see that the early 2000s large carry-all is cementing its return into our closets. The new handbag trend is omnipresent in a more wearable execution and in fresh silhouettes making it one of the biggest accessory trends for 2023.
Oversized hats
There was no shortage of oversized hats on the runway this season. Whether it was knit, pillowy or leather, many designers tried their hand at some statement headpieces. However, the most wearable of them all was the bucket, which was evident at Etro, Carolina Herrera and Alberta Ferretti, to name a few.
Opera length gloves
Gloves have been a fashion staple for many years now. However, we did see a slowdown of this trend in the last few decades being limited to just royal affairs. This season the opera-length gloves cropped up in many designers’ collections and took us by surprise. The Row teamed its simple column dresses with long leather gloves, but for a more delicate take, try mesh or organza options, such as those seen at Erdem and Deveaux.
Wraparound Sunglasses
While some may call the gas station glasses, these were one of the most loved accessory trends for 2023 on the runway. Following their long adherence to the itty-bitty-mini-sunglasses trend, NYFW this season switched it up with a new frame: the wraparound. Popularized by Balenciaga and worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian, these stunner shades range from sleek to alien-like.
Metallic and silver accessories
We’ve seen high-shine embellishments and fabrications steal the spotlight over the past couple of seasons. During NYFW, it was hard to ignore that metallics have increased as mainstays. As metallics rise in popularity, so have mirrored accessories. Bags like ByFar’s Miranda and Diesel’s Mirror bag were spotted all over New York Fashion Week. It’s also worth noting that after years of yellow-gold tones reigning the jewellery scene, now it’s time to embrace all things silver once more. For a more daring and bold look one can even opt for a mixing of metals.
