NASO Profumi turns an Indian summer ritual into perfume
My earliest memories of sipping a khus sherbet is on a summer vacation in my hometown Bikaner, Rajasthan. And before there were air conditioners (or coolers), there was khus. There were dampened khus screens catching the breeze, cool interiors scented by rain soaked roots and summers that needed no thermostat to feel a little more bearable. Long before cooling became something you could set to 22 degrees, India had found its own aromatic answer to the heat. Now, NASO Profumi is bottling that memory with Khus Noir, a contemporary Eau de Parfum built around the enduring character of Indian khus, better known as vetiver.

The opening is crisp, with bergamot, green lime and neroli bringing a bright citrus lift. Think of it as the fragrance equivalent of opening a window just after the first monsoon shower: fresh air rushing in, the heat briefly forgotten. At its heart, lavender, geranium and clary sage bring an aromatic softness, adding layers without taking away from the composition’s clean character.
Then comes the khus. Paired with cedarwood and musk, the Indian vetiver settles into a clean, earthy finish that feels grounded rather than heavy. If the opening is the cool breeze, the base is the earth after rain: greener, deeper and infinitely more lingering.

Khus has always carried a certain duality. It is earthy but refreshing, familiar but distinctive, rooted in tradition yet remarkably easy to reinterpret. That makes it rather perfect for modern perfumery. Khus Noir leans into precisely that tension, taking an ingredient associated with Indian summers and giving it a darker, more polished expression. Its inspiration lies in rain soaked gardens, sunlit courtyards and time honoured rituals, but the fragrance itself does not feel trapped in nostalgia. There is no attempt to recreate the past bottle for bottle. Instead, NASO Profumi takes the sensory memory of khus and edits it for the present, surrounding it with citrus, aromatic herbs, soft woods and musk.
And perhaps that is where the luxury lies. Not in making something unfamiliar feel expensive, but in recognising the richness of something that was already ours. Khus Noir does not need to shout its way into the room. It arrives fresh, settles softly and leaves behind an earthy trace, much like the best memories of summer do.
