BMW and Tyde Unveil 49-foot Electric Foiling Yacht, ‘Open’
BMW and Tyde have joined forces once again to unveil a more expansive and opulent successor to their electric foiling yacht, which made its debut at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. The newly introduced 49-foot Open surpasses its predecessor, the 43-foot Icon, by an impressive six feet, making it, according to BMW, the largest luxury foiling yacht designed for private ownership.
Christoph Ballin, Tyde’s co-founder and managing director, expressed the evolution of their collaboration with BMW, stating, “With the Icon, we have shown how elegant and luxurious sustainable mobility on the water can be. The continuation of the cooperation with BMW is now fuelling the launch into another segment.”

Designed by BMW’s Designworks studio, the Open incorporates hydrofoils adapted from racing yachts, significantly reducing energy consumption. The innovative design claims to save almost 80 percent of energy, allowing the vessel to smoothly glide over the water with minimal drag, wake, and emissions.
Drawing from BMW’s expertise in the automotive sector, Open integrates groundbreaking innovations in electro-mobility. Although specific details regarding speed and range are not provided, the previous model, Icon, boasted a top speed of 30 knots, a cruising speed of 24 knots, and a range exceeding 50 nautical miles on a single charge.
Stefan Ponikva, BMW’s Vice President of Brand Communication and Brand Experience, emphasized their commitment to advancing sustainable mobility through pioneering design and intelligent technology transfer from the automotive sector.
As its name suggests, Open boasts a spacious open cockpit, fostering a connection between guests and the sea. Described as offering “all the amenities of a luxury day yacht,” the yacht features a futuristic exterior complemented by a classic interior. Abundant natural light from both the top and sides ensures a bright and airy salon.

The first deliveries are anticipated in the fall of 2024, promising a new era in luxury and sustainable yachting. With its blend of innovative design, advanced technology, and a commitment to sustainable practices, the BMW and Tyde collaboration continues to redefine the possibilities in the world of luxury watercraft.
