Couture inspired by the Year of the Tiger

According to the Chinese zodiac cycle, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. Celebrating the animal that is the symbol of strength and courage, brands around the world unveiled collections embedded with tiger motifs – prints, patterns and stickers that not only celebrate the tiger but also help spread awareness about endangered species.
Here are some of the collections we have our eyes on.

Balenciaga continued its annual celebration of the Chinese Zodiac with its Year of the Tiger Collection. Centred on orange and black hues, most of the collection is embedded with stripes and patterns, with an exception of a few subtle tiger print logos. Button-down shirts, striped socks, sweaters, and denim jackets with striped padding were some of the heavy tiger themed pieces.

Playful graphics animate Burberry’s tiger capsule which features the animal’s signature stripes alongside other tiger motifs. While the collection is supremely orange, hints of the royal red shine through adding a confident and playful appeal, creating inclusive pieces for men women and children.

Dior men’s designer Kim Jones teamed up with American artist Kenny Scharf to create a capsule collection inspired by the water tiger. The Water Tiger motif makes an appearance in prints, embroidery, and patches on a collection of shirts, cardigans, shorts and sweaters. While the collection mostly features the colours blue and white, it also features red which is considered to be the traditional colour for the Lunar New Year.

Capturing the ideas of enthusiasm, courageousness and vigour, Fendi unveiled a capsule collection inspired by Siberian tigers found in the north-eastern region of China. Classic Fendi accessories like the Regular, Mini, and Nano Baguettes, the Sunshine Shopper as well as ready to wear pieces like t-shirts, jackets and hoodies.

Gucci unveiled a collection called the ‘Gucci Tiger’ comprising of ready-to-wear outfits and accessories. The collection reinterprets a 1960s archival print by Vittorio Accornero which places the tiger against a soft, lush backdrop, alongside Gucci’s GG monogram. The collection includes elements like t-shirts, dresses, cardigans, tote bags, shawls etc.

Embodying the charming and friendly character that those born in the Year of the Tiger, Swarovski unveiled a unique and adorable collectable tiger made with a sparkling 390 facets of yellow, brown, red, black and clear crystal, along with a ‘lucky’ Chinese lantern on its tail.

Tory Burch combines the symbol of strength – the Tiger, with the colour of luck – Red creating the perfect accessory for the year of the tiger. Tanya the Tiger Bag is a playful accessory meticulously crafted with striped details and styled in the classic T Monogram knit.
