A Tribute to Souza’s Legacy

Francis Newton Souza, born in Saligao, Goa, in 1924, is celebrated for his profound impact on modern art. His career, which spanned several decades, was characterised by an intense engagement with themes of human form and spirituality, influenced by a blend of Eastern and Western art traditions. The auction catalogue showcases 48 lots, each offering a glimpse into Souza’s diverse artistic journey, including his iconic heads, depictions of Christ and the Church, and explorations of the nude form.

Masterpieces on Offer

Among the standout pieces is ‘Untitled (Pieta)’, 1987, a poignant work that portrays the Virgin Mary with the lifeless body of Christ. Estimated between INR 3 – 5 crores (USD 361,450 – 602,410), this painting reflects not only religious themes but also Souza’s personal connection to his mother, Lilia Maria Antunes, who passed away the same year. This deeply personal and monumental piece is a testament to Souza’s ability to merge personal sorrow with universal themes.

Another notable work is ‘Californian Girl’, 1968, with an estimate of INR 1.20 – 1.80 crores (USD 144,580 – 216,870). This painting features a curvaceous nude against a tempestuous background, a modern reinterpretation of the female nude. Souza’s playful spin on the classical nude, juxtaposed with his experiences of prejudice in London, adds a layer of cultural commentary to the piece.

Estimated between INR 80 lakhs – 1.20 crores (USD 96,390 – 144,580), this painting demonstrates Souza’s versatility and engagement with different artistic influences.
