IWC Schaffhausen’s ‘IWC Racing’ is inspired by the technical world of motorsport

American watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen has released the Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition ‘IWC Racing’, which is inspired by the technical design of motorsport and the beauty of advanced racing machines. This limited edition has only 15 pieces.
It has a matte black Ceratanium® case and a fully blacked-out 94800 calibre, which gives this limited-edition Big Pilot’s Watch a futuristic appearance.
The watch features IWC’s patented constant-force mechanism that disengages the escapement from the direct flow of power through the wheel train and transmits even impulses of energy to the escape wheel. In conjunction with the tourbillon, which compensates for the negative influences of gravity of the oscillating system. This ensures a highly accurate rate of time being displayed on the watch.
The 46.2-millimetre case, pin buckle, and conical crown are all made of Ceratanium®. This IWC-developed material is hard and scratch-resistant like ceramic and at the same time is light and robust like titanium.
The dial design also features a double moon phase display for the northern and southern hemispheres, white numerals and yellow-coloured accents. The power reserve display at 4 o’clock is reminiscent of a tachometer, a machine that’s used to check the rotation speed in a car.
The ring-shaped structure of the outer dial takes inspiration from the cold air intakes of a high-performance engine. The black rubber strap has an inlay made of Alcantara®*, a synthetic and durable micro-fibre with superb grip, which is often used for the seats and steering wheel covers of high-performance cars.
