Ruhi Gilder
Ain’t no luxury like love, so this weekend curl up in bed with one of these films, and spend quality time with yourself (or someone special). For the ones with a significant other, we’ve got recommendations that will take you on a journey of love. For all the single ladies, movies that will make you thank your stars for the single status. For those spending the day with their best friends, binge movies that will make you feel grateful for your bestie.
For the loved-up couple:
Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians- Kevin Kwan

All the drama of a soap opera and the glamour that comes with belonging to one of the richest families in Singapore comes together in Crazy Rich Asians. The story focuses on Rachel Chu, a New York native, and NYU professor who travels with her boyfriend Nick Young to the latter’s best friend’s wedding. There she meets his rich Asian family and chaos in the form of high heels, couture and old Chinese family politics follows. The film is based on the 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan.

Two rom-com veterans come together in this charming 1999 film. Hugh Grant’s character is a British boy-next-door who owns a bookstore, while Julia Roberts plays a famous American actress. Their lives clash and the result is a wholesome romantic film. All I have to say about this film is, “I’m just a writer, sitting behind a screen, asking you to watch this movie!”

One for the ages, this 1990 film is a classic for a reason. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere’s chemistry sparks off the screen and this film has so many memorable romantic moments. Remember Roberts getting her vindication at a Rodeo Drive luxury department store and Gere’s declaration of love as he climbs up the fire escape to get to his lady love. If you’ve not seen it, take this opportunity to do so now, and if you have, it never hurts to give it a rewatch!

Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant star in this early aughts romantic comedy film. Grant plays the role of a rich spoiled boy at the head of a large corporation, while Bullock plays an activist cum lawyer who works for Grant. As Lucy (Bullock) grows tired of her childish boss, she puts in her two weeks’ notice, and of course, romance ensues.

There’s nothing better than a film that takes you on a cross-country tour to Italy, India, and Bali. The protagonist eats, prays and falls in love in each place respectively. The 2010 American biographical romantic drama film stars Julia Roberts and is based on Elizabeth Gilberts’ autobiographical novel of the same name.

A deviation from the numerous romantic movies on the list, Gone Girl is a psychological thriller directed by David Fincher. Like all great films, it’s based on a novel, by Gillian Flynn. It follows the seemingly perfect lives of Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) and his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike). Let’s just say all the single ladies and men will be glad to not have a significant other like Nick or Amy.

Spend a summer tucked away in the lush Tuscan countryside via this beautifully shot film. Starring Diane Lane, based on Frances Mayes’ 1996 memoir of the same name, the film is about a recently divorced American writer who impulse buys a villa in Italy. She then hires a crew to fix the broken-down villa, while simultaneously attempting to rebuild her life, which has been turned upside down because of her cheating ex-husband.

An oldie but a goldie, this one has a stellar cast of Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, Maggie Smith and Sarah Jessica Parker. It’s the perfect revenge film, centring around three divorced women who want to punish their ex-husbands who left them for younger women. Think John Tucker Must Die, but for the middle-aged. The film is a hoot-a-minute and follows these women’s journey towards independence and happiness.
For your Galentine:
Bride Wars

Best friends Emma and Liv, played by Anne Hathway and Kate Hudson respectively plan the wedding of their dreams. However, when both their bookings get confirmed for the same day at The Plaza, New York, neither bride is willing to shift their date, prompting an all-out war of the bridezillas. At its heart though, this rom-com is more about best friends than their SO’s.
