TAG Heuer and Porsche have collaborated to create the ultimate sports watch for sports car fans, the Connected Calibre E4 – Porsche Edition. A luxury connected timepiece inspired by the all-electric Porsche Taycan, the sporty wrist candy is meant specifically for Porsche owners to track their car’s vitals, right from mileage to temperature, with the new E4 smartwatch.
“Our brands have led the way in embracing new technologies: just as TAG Heuer has led the luxury watch world in terms of embracing smartwatch technology, so Porsche’s electric cars innovate in their field,” Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, said in a press release.
E4 meets Taycan
The entire design and features of the watch bear similarities to the features used in the all-electric Taycan. The watch features a 45 mm case crafted from black Grade 2 titanium, coated in DLC and treated in a sandblasted finish. The Taycan’s shades of “frozen blue” and grey make an appearance on the polished ceramic bezel which has a dedicated scale going from zero to 400, referencing the speed of a Porsche car. This scale can be used to read functions related to the car or to display metrics like heart rate. Aside from the high quality lacqer, the ceramic bezel gives the watch the feel of a traditional high-end timepiece. The crown has a large diameter, and stands out from the watch, making it easy for fingers to access and control the crown. The pushers have a mechanical feel, highlighting TAG Heuer’s 162 years of heritage in making high-end mechanical watches.
Innovative complications
A flat sapphire crystal sits atop the timepiece, protecting its OLED display. The dial which has been dubbed the “Circuit,” features electric circuits ued within both the Taycan and the smartwatch, as well as actual racing circuits. The case back is engraved with “TAG Heuer x Porsche” to mark the release. The leather and rubber strap mirror the interiors of Stuttgart’s vehicles.
The face of the dial displays three chronograph-style complications that bear information from compatible Porsche models. These include showing owner’s the car battery life, indicating its autonomy (battery percentage and gas levels) and a shortcut to the Wear OS My Porsche app, which allows you to control elements like temperature and air conditioning in your vehicle from the watch. Another complication also displays the owner’s car’s mileage.
Battery and connectivity
The watch is a great way to track one’s Porsche, however, in order to unlock the variety of features, owners will need to have a Porsche ID, Porsche Connect subscription and the My Porsche app on their watch and their phone. Some of the models that can connect to the timepiece include the Panamera (G2), the 911, the Cayenne (E2 II), the 718 and the Macan, among others.
The watch also comes with a promising battery life of one full day and can charge up to 100 percent in under two hours. The E4 also comes with a few cool features like sensors that detect your heart rate while doubling as a microphone, 5.0 Bluetooth connectivity and a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear processor. The operating system, Wear2 by Google, allows you to access other apps, too.
Frédéric Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer says, ‘For both TAG Heuer and Porsche, the thrill of driving is part of our heritage, and this watch celebrates the fearless spirit of both Maisons – as well as highlighting the sustainable innovation of the Taycan. This watch evokes many of the passions that we share – high performance, technological innovation and our love for unique and unmatched products.’
