Famed South Korean K-pop group Exo is all set for their first comeback as an entire group. But before the album’s release in July, the band unveiled their pre-release song “Let me In” along with a music video. “Let Me In” reached the top of the iTunes Top Songs charts in 33 countries, including Brazil, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Singapore, Mexico, Peru, among others. In addition to topping the digital album sales charts for QQ Music and KuGou Music, “Let Me In” topped the Music Index Chart for QQ Music as well as the Music Video Chart for both the Korean and Global categories.

But this isnt the first time EXO has broken records. In 2021, fans were ecstatic when EXO made their long-awaited comeback with the special album “Don’t Fight the Feeling.” The album went on to sell over a million copies in only one week after topping iTunes charts in several countries across the world. For the week of June 19, EXO’s title single “Don’t Fight the Feeling” debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales list, while the album debuted at No. 8 on the World Albums chart.

On November 2, 2018, the group’s fifth studio album “Don’t Mess Up My Tempo” was released, along with the Korean version of their title single “Tempo” music video. On November 3, it quickly garnered 17,048,689 views in under 24 hours. EXO previously attracted 4.48 million viewers in 24 hours with their smash tune “Monster” in 2016, then broke the record with 8.8 million views in the same period with “Ko Ko Bop” a year later. EXO has broken their own record yet more with “Tempo.”

EXO sold over 66,000 tickets in 0.2 seconds for their 2017 tour ‘EXO PLANET #3 -The ElyXiOn’ with over 1.15 million fans seeking to get a ticket, setting the record for the fastest-selling concert among any Korean artists and it has yet to be beaten.

But EXO isn’t the first K-Pop group to have broken national and international records. Here’s a rundown of some of the most record-breaking K-Pop groups with some of the biggest hits in the industry
New Jeans

NewJeans has become the fastest K-pop group to surpass 1 billion Spotify streams, breaking a Guinness World Record previously held by BTS’ Jungkook and BLACKPINK’s Lisa. The five-piece female group took 219 days to attain the massive sum, which they achieved on May 8, 2023. Currently, NewJeans has just six songs accessible on Spotify: its four-track debut EP ‘NewJeans,’ published last year, and the band’s most played tracks, ‘Ditto’ and ‘OMG,’ with 313.2 million and 312.4 million streams, respectively, as of May 2023. Both songs debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, with ‘OMG’ charting for six weeks in a row.

Map of the Soul: 7 not only retains the record for the highest sales on the first day and week of release — 2.65 million and 3.38 million, respectively — but it is also the best-selling K-Pop album of all time. It presently has over 4.91 million sales and may easily surpass 5 million in the future. With 4.57 million sales, their own Map of the Soul: Persona is the second best-selling album.

His “Gangnam Style” music video still retains the record for the most-watched K-Pop music video on YouTube, with 4.56 billion views. BLACKPINK’s “DDU-DU DDU-DU” music video ranks second with 1.96 billion views, which is great, but far behind “Gangnam Style” whose views keep increasing.

A PAK, or Perfect All-Kill, is a South Korean music chart achievement in which a song simultaneously reaches number one on the real-time, daily, and weekly components of iChart, which includes MelOn, Genie, Bugs!, and other music charts. IU now holds the record for the most PAK tracks, with 21 songs. BIGBANG, the artist in second place, has had six songs attain PAKs.

BoA

BoA is and will continue to be one of Japan’s renowned Korean acts. BoA has three of the top five best-selling albums by Korean bands in Oricon history, with ‘Valenti’ selling over 1.24 million copies, ‘Best of Soul’ selling 1.09 million, and ‘Listen To My Soul’ selling over 932,000 copies as the #1, #2, and #4 best-selling albums. This is an incredible accomplishment, especially considering BoA did it as a female soloist from 2002 to 2005 – no other Korean performer has broken BoA’s record.

TWICE

TWICE, the world-renowned and highly acclaimed female group, demonstrates why they are one of the K-Pop industry’s powerhouses. With all of their accomplishments as a six-year-old group, they have demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that they can shatter any barrier for a girl group. TWICE is the best-selling female group in history, with over 10 million cumulative sales globally. They are also the first and only girl group to win Song of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards three years in a row.

BLACKPINK

BLACKPINK, the Korean pop sensation, has smashed many Guinness World Records and YouTube records with their violent music video for “How You Like That.” The highly anticipated song and video for their first single of 2020 were both released on June 26 following several weeks of teasing on their social platforms. According to Guinness, the video had 86.3 million views, breaking three records. BLACKPINK also holds the Guinness World Record for the most followed female group on Spotify and the music group with the most subscribers on YouTube. The “How You Like That” music video’s YouTube debut, which had 1.66 million peak concurrent views, also won the girls two more Guinness/YouTube records. “How You Like That” is a confident breakup song with a peppy trap and EDM beat that follows their smash collaboration with Lady Gaga, “Sour Candy,” off Gaga’s new Chromatica album.

SHINee

SHINee’s first song “Replay – you are my everything -” sold 91,000 copies in its first week and was ranked second on the Oricon Weekly Song Ranking Chart. Their first-week sales beat the previous record set by Super Junior’s Bonamana, which sold 59,000 copies and set a new record for the most sales of a Korean group’s debut single

TXT

TXT launched their long-awaited mini-album, The Name Chapter: Temptation, on January 27, 2023, and the album reached multiple milestones in less than 24 hours. They broke not just their own prior records, but also the records of other K-pop groups. They were the first K-pop group to achieve a specific charting milestone with a mini-album. The Name Chapter: Temptation sold almost 1.87 million copies on the first day, making them the fourth group in Hanteo Charts history to have the greatest first-day sales. Given that the album’s predecessors are all BTS albums, they became the second-ever artist to win the award, as well as the group with the most first-day sales among fourth-generation K-pop groups. According to MelOn, the entire album has received over 3 million listens in only nine hours. Sugar Rush Ride, the band’s title tune, debuted at #46 on MelOn 24Hits, and they once again topped the fourth-generation K-pop groups.
