Tom Cruise to shoot a movie in outer space

Tom Cruise has received immense appreciation throughout his career, and this time he might create history. Move over fighter jets, because for Cruise that’s too basic; this time it’s outer space. Hollywood made the impossible possible with an announcement that superstar Tom Cruise will be the first actor to shoot a movie in outer space. Not only is it a first for Hollywood, but Tom Cruise could also be the first civilian to do a spacewalk, and we can’t wait to see what is in store.

Director Doug Liman and Tom Cruise have spoken to Hollywood studio Universal about the project that will see Cruise taking a rocket to the International Space Station — how cool is that! If the plans for the film come through, he would fly to space to film the moment when he helps save the planet. With his most recent blockbuster film Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise’s love for space and flying has been established time and time again, hence it comes as no surprise.

While the idea was proposed in 2020, it was halted in light of the pandemic. It was only this week that Universal confirmed their keenness to go ahead with the project. Although the film remains unnamed, the action film is based on a man who needs to go up to space to save the day. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting, he could be the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station. However, most of the movie would be shot on earth and would culminate with the character going up to space to save the day.

Space Entertainment Enterprise announced in January this year that it would work with Axiom Space to build a content and entertainment studio and multi-purpose arena space station module. The venture, called SEE-1, is planned to launch in late 2024 and would be connected to the Axiom Station for the shooting of films in outer space. Taking to Instagram Axiom Space shared a post captioned, “Commercial space companies are dramatically expanding human spaceflight. We at Axiom Space are proud to be part of this new era of space – from building the world’s first commercial space station to enabling private astronaut missions to the ISS. Humanity’s next step off the planet starts with Axiom Space.”

Pushing the creative boundaries, after receiving a greenlit, production could start soon. However, the trip to orbit doesn’t have a launch date yet but it is expected to be completed by December 2024. Although two years away, we have to say that we are eagerly waiting for this outer space trip to come to the big screen — and probably delight us, just as Tom Cruise always does. In the meanwhile let Mission Impossible be the film you’re looking forward to next year!
