By Pratishtha Rana
Where there is gin, there must be cocktails. Bartenders’ favourite, gin is one spirit that adds so many flavours and notes to cocktails. No wonder, the list of gin concoctions at most bars is exhaustive.
To celebrate the World Gin Day, top mixologists from Four Seasons Mumbai, W Goa and JW Marriott Mussoorie have shared with us their special gin cocktail recipes that can be easily made at home.

AER – Four Seasons, Gin Basil Slush
Which dish pairs the best with Gin Basil slush?
The gin slush goes well with various Asian preparations. My top recommendations would be to pair it with Thai curries, Cantonese chicken stir-fry or Indian kebabs.
Why is Tanqueray No. Ten your choice of gin for the cocktail?
Tanqueray no. Ten is a citrus-forward gin infused with grapefruit and lemon zest, which makes it one of the best gins for cocktails.
It helps in keeping the flavour profile simple and unassuming to avoid overpowering other ingredients.
Which are your three favourite gins?
Hapusa – It is a homegrown Himalayan dry gin that has juniper, turmeric, mango, gondhoraj lime and more. I love the spices and the taste and aroma of this gin. It goes well on ice and makes for a great tipple by itself.
Tanqueray No. Ten – It is different from the classic London Dry gin and is a very citrus-forward gin, best suited for shaking up martinis.
Aviation – This American gin has a strong flavour of the unique Anantamul (Indian Sarsaparilla) and six other botanicals. It is best enjoyed with a splash of tonic and a lemon peel.
What are the newest gin cocktail trends?
– Martinis are making a comeback with elegant styles of presentation.
– G&T served in different styles (elegant glassware, ice blocks, unconventional garnishes etc.)
Cocktail: Baccae (pronounced as buh-kaa-ay)
Recipe by Kshitij Goel – Beverage Ambassador, W Goa

Bombay Sapphire Gin – 60 ml
Bitter aperitif – 10 ml
Berry mix – 1 bar spoon
Fresh lime juice – 15 ml
Berry Air
Ice cubes
Add gin, bitter aperitif and fresh lime with berry mix in a three-piece shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice and shake well.
Fine strain in Nick and Nora glass.
Top the drink with berry air.
W Goa – Baccae Gin Cocktail
Which dish or cuisine pairs best with Baccae?
Mini tarts and Fattoush pizza pair well with this berry-based gin cocktail.
Why is Bombay Sapphire Gin your choice of gin for the cocktail?
Bombay Sapphire is a premium London Dry gin that blends well with the flavour profile of Baccae, a no-sweetener drink with sour taste notes.
So, this choice of gin helps to uplift the taste palate of the cocktail and lend it a cleaner and crisper finish.
Which are your three favourite gins?
Bombay Sapphire Gin – It is aromatic and goes well with most classic beverages.
Pumori – Its ingredients are sourced from around Mount Pumori and it is great for people starting out with gin.
Pink Pepper – This gin is from the Cognac region in France, and it has beautiful notes of pink peppercorns.
What are the newest gin cocktail trends?
– Bottled cocktails have made it easier than ever to enjoy a delicious drink on-the-go.
– Gin sonic cocktails, a refined new twist to G&T, are becoming popular as well.
Cocktail: Cucumber Basil Martini
Recipe by Manoj Jangid, Director Food & Beverage, JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar

Fresh cucumber puree – 90ml
Basil Leaf – 4-5
Hendrick’s Gin – 60ml
Fresh lemon juice – 30ml
Sugar syrup – 30ml
Garnish: Fresh basil sprig
Add the puree, basil leaf, gin and all other ingredients in a cocktail shaker
Add ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds
Double strain the cocktail in a pre-chilled cocktail glass
Garnish with fresh Basil sprig
Cucumber Basil gin
Which dish or cuisine pairs best with Cucumber Basil Martini?
We can pair this well with Italian food like Pizza Margarita, Pasta in Arrabbiata sauce.
Why is Hendrick’s Gin your choice of gin for the cocktail?
The unique flavour of Hendrick’s Gin comes from cucumbers and roses combined with a heavenly blend of eleven other botanicals. It’s a perfect base for the Cucumber and Basil Martini.
Which are your three favourite gins?
Hapusa is one of the best local gins from India. It sources juniper berries from the Himalayas and uses turmeric, mango, coriander seeds and almonds as part of its recipe. With floral notes and a spiced finish, Hapusa stimulates earthy flavours on the palate.
Hendrick’s Gin has a fairly long finish with a serious juniper backed acidity. It has notes of soaked rose petals, lime, Persian cucumbers and a surprising bitterness. It’s a great gin for a Dry Martini.
Roku Gin is an excellent gin from Japan’s legendary Suntory. This expression is made using various botanicals, including six Japanese botanicals that provide a whistle-stop tour of the four seasons. These include sakura leaf and sakura flower for spring, Sencha tea and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter.
What are the newest gin cocktail trends?
A lot of homegrown gins like Hapusa, Stranger & Sons and Greater Than in India are trending and can be used to curate some great cocktails with local ingredients.
Also, pre-mixed drinks like gin & tonic and gin cocktails-in-can are doing well with consumers.
Cocktail: G & T No. 1
Recipe by Wilbur Tauro, Director – F&B, JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort & Spa
JW Marriott Mussoorie – G & T No 1
Monkey 47 Gin – 60 ml
Himalayan Thyme – 1 sprig
Star Anise – 1
Simple Syrup (Sugar and Lemon) – 10 ml
Fever Tree Tonic Water (as per taste)
Garnish – whipped cream, chopped fruits
Drop the thyme sprig and star anise in the glass.
Pour the gin and mix slowly to enhance flavours.
Next, add simple syrup to the mix.
Top it up with tonic water.
Garnish with whipped cream and chopped fruits.
Which dish or cuisine pairs the best with G & T No. 1?
Finger foods, Prawn Tempura Sushi and Fish & Chips taste good with the cocktail.
Why is Monkey 47 your choice of gin for the cocktail?
A total of 47 ingredients is used in Monkey 47 Gin. It is essentially a medley of herbs, shoots and leaves. This makes it a perfect fit for the cocktail’s taste profile.
Which are your three favourite gins?
My three favourite gins are Roku, Monkey 47 and The Botanist. I believe that food and beverage choices are personal and devoid of trends or mass opinion. For me, the infusion of herbs, spices and other botanicals in any offering has always been a fascinating thing to learn, experience and then present it to people who enjoy alcohol.
What are the newest gin cocktail trends?
Gin drinkers now want bolder, newer flavours and experiences. People are also taking interest in hyper-local gin brands.
Sustainability, ethically-sourced and eco-friendly production processes are slowly becoming the way forward for distillers and consumers alike.
