To celebrate the World Gin Day, top mixologists from Four Seasons Mumbai, W Goa and JW Marriott Mussoorie have shared with us their special gin cocktail recipes that can be easily made at home.
Cocktail: Gin Basil Slush Recipe by Harish Subramanian – Bartender, AER – Bar and Lounge, Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai
INGREDIENTS: Tanqueray No. Ten gin – 50 ml Fresh Basil syrup – 50ml Garnish – Basil sprig
METHOD: Blend the gin, fresh basil syrup and ice together in a blender. Pour the slush in a tall glass. Garnish with a sprig of basil and serve.
Which dish pairs the best with Gin Basil slush? The gin slush goes well with various Asian preparations. My top recommendations would be to pair it with Thai curries, Cantonese chicken stir-fry or Indian kebabs.

Tanqueray No. Ten – It is different from the classic London Dry gin and is a very citrus-forward gin, best suited for shaking up martinis.
Aviation – This American gin has a strong flavour of the unique Anantamul (Indian Sarsaparilla) and six other botanicals. It is best enjoyed with a splash of tonic and a lemon peel.
What are the newest gin cocktail trends? – Martinis are making a comeback with elegant styles of presentation. – G&T served in different styles (elegant glassware, ice blocks, unconventional garnishes etc.)
BERRY BOMB Cocktail: Baccae (pronounced as buh-kaa-ay) Recipe by Kshitij Goel – Beverage Ambassador, W Goa
INGREDIENTS: Bombay Sapphire Gin – 60 ml Bitter aperitif – 10 ml Berry mix – 1 bar spoon Fresh lime juice – 15 ml Berry Air Ice cubes
METHOD: Add gin, bitter aperitif and fresh lime with berry mix in a three-piece shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake well. Fine strain in Nick and Nora glass. Top the drink with berry air.

METHOD: Add the puree, basil leaf, gin and all other ingredients in a cocktail shaker
Add ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds
Double strain the cocktail in a pre-chilled cocktail glass

Why is Hendrick’s Gin your choice of gin for the cocktail? The unique flavour of Hendrick’s Gin comes from cucumbers and roses combined with a heavenly blend of eleven other botanicals. It’s a perfect base for the Cucumber and Basil Martini.
Which are your three favourite gins? Hapusa is one of the best local gins from India. It sources juniper berries from the Himalayas and uses turmeric, mango, coriander seeds and almonds as part of its recipe. With floral notes and a spiced finish, Hapusa stimulates earthy flavours on the palate.
Hendrick’s Gin has a fairly long finish with a serious juniper backed acidity. It has notes of soaked rose petals, lime, Persian cucumbers and a surprising bitterness. It’s a great gin for a Dry Martini.
Roku Gin is an excellent gin from Japan’s legendary Suntory. This expression is made using various botanicals, including six Japanese botanicals that provide a whistle-stop tour of the four seasons. These include sakura leaf and sakura flower for spring, Sencha tea and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter.
What are the newest gin cocktail trends? A lot of homegrown gins like Hapusa, Stranger & Sons and Greater Than in India are trending and can be used to curate some great cocktails with local ingredients.

A SPICY SIZZLE Cocktail: G & T No. 1 Recipe by Wilbur Tauro, Director – F&B, JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort & Spa
INGREDIENTS: Monkey 47 Gin – 60 ml Himalayan Thyme – 1 sprig Star Anise – 1 Simple Syrup (Sugar and Lemon) – 10 ml Fever Tree Tonic Water (as per taste) Garnish – whipped cream, chopped fruits
METHOD: Drop the thyme sprig and star anise in the glass. Pour the gin and mix slowly to enhance flavours. Next, add simple syrup to the mix. Top it up with tonic water. Garnish with whipped cream and chopped fruits.

Which are your three favourite gins? My three favourite gins are Roku, Monkey 47 and The Botanist. I believe that food and beverage choices are personal and devoid of trends or mass opinion. For me, the infusion of herbs, spices and other botanicals in any offering has always been a fascinating thing to learn, experience and then present it to people who enjoy alcohol.
