Barrels and Blooms: A Kolkata Abode Where Past and Present Collide

Step into Barrels and Blooms, a Kolkata home that’s more than just bricks and mortar – it’s a captivating story woven in thread and texture. Designed by AB Design, with Aanchhal Bhuwalka at the helm, this 1,800 square foot residence is a delightful paradox. Imagine a contemporary canvas splashed with vibrant colonial accents, a symphony of old-world charm and modern elegance.

The challenge? To create a space that pulsed with youthful energy while retaining the warmth of a bygone era. Aanchhal, the maestro behind this masterpiece, achieved this through some truly unique material marriages. Picture the living and dining areas – a harmonious blend of metal and cane, radiating warmth with contemporary artwork adorning the walls. Think “Mad Men” sophistication meets modern chic. But the magic doesn’t stop there. The den, a haven for relaxation, exudes an old-world cigar room vibe. Imagine rich wooden wainscoting panels complementing a plush Chesterfield sofa and a vintage trunk coffee table. It’s a space that whispers tales of distinguished gentlemen and leather-bound books.

The neutral color scheme of the living room is cleverly offset by the pop of color from a statement armchair, adding a touch of youthful whimsy. And separating the living and dining areas is a stunning metal and cane partition, ensuring a sense of flow while maintaining distinct zones. The cane motif continues in the dining chairs and crockery unit, beautifully complemented by a captivating painting that dominates the wall.

The kitchen is a study in modern functionality with a touch of artistic flair. Picture acrylic graphite and white shutters with matching tiles for the floor and dado – a clean, contemporary space that’s perfect for whipping up culinary masterpieces. But the true brilliance lies in the details. Each bedroom is a reflection of its occupant’s personality. The children’s room boasts a playful charm, with a headboard shaped like bunny ears for one child and a braided headboard with vertical grooves for the other. The master bedroom, however, exudes a sophisticated elegance, featuring metal profiles with a PU finish adorning the back panel.

AB Design’s signature touch is evident throughout the home. Bespoke furniture pieces, crafted with an eye for vintage aesthetics, add a layer of timeless charm. And who says leather is just for sofas? Here, it takes a surprising turn, adorning the ceiling, adding a touch of unexpected luxury.

Despite its compact size, the home is a treasure trove of conversation starters. The eye is drawn to the unique trunk coffee table that doubles as storage, and the TV unit that cleverly conceals a bar – perfect for entertaining in style.
