Bulgari, the Roman high jewellery brand launched its first-ever India inspired and exclusive jewellery piece – the Bulgari Mangalsutra. The iconic mangalsutra was reimagined for a modern woman, together with global brand ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Priced at a whopping ₹ 3,49,000, the necklace is an 18kt yellow gold set with round black onyx inserts and pavé diamonds.
Traditionally worn by women after marriage, a mangalsutra stands for Mangala aka the name of the planet Mars. Due to this connection, the necklace commonly includes a coral gem that is sacred to Mars. The mangalsutra chain is made of black glass beads (kala pota), that are said to repel the evil eye.
The Bulgari necklace is lined with black beads and includes the traditional black inserts with a modern twist. The shape of the inserts is inspired by ancient Roman coins and the edges are inscribed with the Bulgari logo. Speaking about the necklace, Chopra says, “It’s such a contemporary cool piece that you can wear it with Indian clothes and western clothes.”
On her association with the jewellery, powerhouse Chopra-Jonas says that more than anything, she started out a fan of the brand. “I guess I wore them [Bulgari] so much, they said ‘let’s just make this formal’,” she says with a laugh. “I have always admired and been fascinated by Bulgari’s magnificent works of art, so many of which celebrate some of the most precious resources of my homeland. We connect so organically over our love for India and the beauty it has to offer.”

Speaking on the launch, Mauro Di Roberto, Managing Director – Jewellery Business Unit at Bulgari, said, “It took us several years to design our interpretation of the Mangalsutra for the modern Indian woman, for whom this piece is often one of the most important pieces of jewellery she wears.”
