A week since its big release, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is still the talk of the town – the set, the outfits, the characters and most importantly Margot Robbie!
We already knew, from the beginning that Robbie was the perfect choice for the role, yet we cannot stop gushing over how beautiful and authentic her portrayal of Barbie is. It comes as no surprise, given how immensely talented the Australian actress is. Be it her portrayal as the neurotic Harley Quinn, the ambition-hungry Nellie LaRoy or the blonde bombshell Naomi Lapaglia, Robbie has always slid into her characters with great ease. As the world celebrates the actress’ performance in Barbie, we take a look at some of her most iconic movie roles ever.

Damien Chazelle’s Babylon is a chaotic depiction of old Hollywood in the 1920s when silent movies were quite the attraction. A star-studded affair, the movie features names like Brad Pitt, Tobey Mcguire, Samara Weaving, Phoebe Tonkin, Olivia Wilde and of course Margot Robbie who takes on the role of a rising, fame-hungry actress named Nellie LaRoy. The character is said to be loosely based on real-life American actress Clara Bow. Margot Robbie does a wonderful job portraying the painfully chaotic character, helping the audience feel the character’s anger and frustration as she struggles to film her first talkie, and her journey then on.

Inspired by real-life events, Bombshell tells the story of three strong, ambitious news anchors working together to expose Fox CEO Roger Ailes as a sexual predator. While Charlie Theron and Nicole Kidman play real figures, Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson, respectively, Margot plays a composite of characters from the real-life incident. In her portrayal of Kayla Pospisl, a young associate producer at Fox News, Robbie takes viewers on a heart-wrenching journey; she transforms from a confident, ambitious woman to a frightened one, grappling with morality and guilt in the face of power.

A lighthearted crime thriller, Focus pairs Will Smith alongside Margot Robbie as a novice con artist couple who fall in love but go their separate ways. The duo are reunited three years later in a surprise encounter at a high-stakes racecar circuit. Unlike her other characters, Robbie as Jess Barnet is a rather lighthearted performance. The character showcases several different layers from a soft romantic to a dangerously smart, criminal mastermind with exceptional bluffing skills.

After the epic disaster that was Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn gets her redemption in the 2020 movie, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. While Suicide Squad focused on the clumsy, comical character of Harley Quinn, Birds of Prey presented her in a whole new light. Her larger-than-life charisma shone throughout the movie, without taking too far a step from the original themes of the character. Reeling from her breakup with Joker, Harley Quinn teams up with a trio of women, Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya to protect a young girl named Cassandra Cain from one of Gotham City’s notorious villains Roman Sionis.

Barbie might be the biggest movie of her entire career, but Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Tonya Harding in I, Tonya will always be her best performance to date. It was, in fact, the movie that got her first Oscar nomination. Margot essays the role of real-life (disgraced) figure skater Tonya Harding in this dark comedy. This is said to be Margot’s most compelling performance to date and with good reason. Tonya Harding was a complex character with a complicated, unlikable persona; and Margot wasn’t afraid to be the unlikable character. She essayed every emotion, struggle and experience Harding went through. Not to mention the actress trained extensively for four months to enact the skating scenes.  Margot’s resilience and the powerplay in her performance are what makes this her most iconic film ever.

Margot Robbie has quite the range when it comes to her on-screen roles. And her portrayal of Elizabeth I in Josie Rourke’s Mary, Queen of Scots is by far one of the most applauded performances. It is also one of her most transformative looks ever. Donning pale white makeup and a frigid, red wig, Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I was regarded as one of her most haunting roles as she illustrated a cold, grim antagonist with wicked intentions. Robbie uses her eyes to express the complications that exist within her character; to depict the turmoil and conflict, and her struggle to choose between her duty and her desires.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is further proof that Margot Robbie’s limited screen time does not affect her on-screen charisma. Taking place in a ’60s Los Angeles setting, the movie reimagines the tale of washed-out actor Rick and his stunt double, Cliff. Margot plays a fictionalized version of Sharon Tate, an actress and model who became a victim of the Manson family murders. Despite her limited screen time and a handful of lines, Robbie manages to capture Tate’s legacy beautifully, depicting her kin, generous persona that outshines Bradd Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio’s performances.

Margot Robbie’s role in The Wolf of Wall Street was believed to be her breakout film and one that really put her on the map for stardom. She starred as the blonde bombshell Naomi Lapaglia, the second wife of the infamous New York stockbroker, Jordan Belfort. Even though Leonardo DiCaprio was the main man in the movie, Robbie managed to shine on her own capturing the bold, cunning, confident, and dazzling persona of Lapaglia wonderfully, while complimenting DiCaprio’s character. Interestingly, Robbie got the movie after she slapped DiCaprio during the audition, which also led to the movie being thoroughly improvised during filming.
