Never-seen-before paintings by Indian modernists to be auctioned at Sotheby’s London
As part of celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art sales at Sotheby’s worldwide, a highly intriguing auction is set to take place on September 29.

A collection of never-before-seen modern Indian art, which includes unpublished artworks by artists VS Gaitonde and Ram Kumar, will be up for auction. On sale would works of South Asia’s leading modernists, rarer and lesser-known artists that have been previously underrepresented.

Highlights include property from the Bhupen Khakhar estate, as well as the collections of Gunnar and Ingar Hansen, renowned art critic George Butcher and design genius Patwant Singh.

The most interesting pieces of artwork are from the private collection of the Danish couple Gunnar Hansen and his wife Inger. This couple had stayed in India a few decades ago when Gunnar was working at Larsen & Toubro. These pieces were bought by the Hansens in the 1960s and 1970s, which have been treasured in the family for some 40 years.

Gunnar, while living in Mumbai was a regular visitor at Pundole Art Gallery and Gallery Chemould. It is here, that he had met VS Gaitonde, Ram Kumar and Krishen Khanna and had bought their paintings.

The auction has some 100 plus paintings from South Asia and 18 of which includes the works of Ram Kumar, Krishen Khanna, Mohan Samant and Piraji Sagara. 16 of this 18 are till now unpublished and unseen. These are valued approximately between Rs 18 crore to Rs 23 crore.
