The next time man takes a step on the Moon, you can be sure he’ll do so in style! Luxury fashion powerhouse Prada has been signed on to design spacesuits for NASA’s Artemis III lunar mission, which is to take place in 2025. This mission is also special as it will see the first woman and first person of colour walk on the surface of the Moon.
The announcement – during World Space Week from October 4 to October 10, 2023 – was made by Axiom Space, who is the architect of the world’s first commercial space station. It marks the first collaboration between the Italian fashion behemoth with and the space company. On their website, Axiom Space posted a quote by Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space: “We are thrilled to partner with Prada on the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit. Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits.”
As per reports, engineers at Prada will work alongside Axiom’s systems team throughout the process of designing the lunar suits.
Will the spacesuit have motifs? A colour-block hint or perhaps another design? We can sure see that look burning up the Insta feeds when its out!
