Someplace Else opens doors in Mumbai

Schenelle Dsouza
For well over 25 years, Someplace Else has been a crowd favourite in the city of Kolkata with its lively music and iconic tunes, creating some of the most magical moments for many. Recreating the same magic for hearty Mumbaikars, Someplace Else carved its space in BKC’S Jio World Drive shopping centre.

From the moment you step in, you’re in a different place, like the name suggests. Vibrant ambience, a soothing vibe and music that speaks to the heart, Someplace Else really feels like someplace else

Artistic ambience
The interiors are artistically designed by Project Orange from London. Unlike the one in Kolkata, Someplace Else in Mumbai has a more vibrant and colourful appearance. While Kolkata had dark-panelled walls and leather seats, the Mumbai outlet creates a mix of colours with a double-sided bar, brightly coloured cane lamps and colourful wall furnishings, including a wall covered with circular cushions of varied colours and patterns.

The front near the main entrance is designed with several vertical fins made of wood that switch to create a clever series of illusions, with a wall clad in a series of timber carved cells and wheels as well as a layer of vinyl.

The restaurant is filled with varied seating areas, couches, tables with sofa chairs, and a lounge area designed with a red velvet theme.

“While Someplace Else Kolkata recreates the vibe of a British pub, Someplace Else Mumbai is more vibrant and contemporary décor that is perfect for Mumbai,” says Yazad Marfatia, Area Director & Head of Sales, ApeejaySurrendra Park Hotels Ltd.
Food for the soul
“The Park hotel is known for its entertainment and nightlife business. We have reimagined it as a whole new space that still has music, live acts and entertainment at its core, offering curated food and drinks,” said Mr Vijay Dewan, Managing Director, ApeejaySurrendra Park Hotels Ltd.

Strawberry Basil
A widely Asian and partly Indian menu, the restaurant focuses on creating delicious fusions of flavours and ingredients. Starting off with a round of drinks, we sipped on a Strawberry Basil cocktail and Pirate’s Punch. The former was a vodka-based drink, with fresh strawberries, basil and a dash of fresh lime; while the latter is a fun tropical drink with black-and-white Bacardi, pineapple and finished off with coconut for a rich aroma.

Pirate’s Punch
The first dish to arrive at our table was the Prawn Hargrow. The dish comprised of steaming, translucent prawn dumplings served with a side of spicy but delicious chilli oil that complemented the dish well.

Following shortly after was a popular request dish from the menu – Kashmiri Kalari Cheese Multigrain Bread. At first glance, one might assume the dish to be a generic grilled cheese toast, but it’s more than that. Served with a schezwan and garlic dip, the dish is the perfect quick bite to enjoy while toe-tapping to energetic live music.

Another popular favourite is the Gun Fired Uramaki, layered with tuna and salmon, cream cheese, avocado and cucumber which added a nice crunch in texture. The prawns were tender in the Shrimp Tempura Maki and went well with a tandoori mayo filling that added just the right amount of zing when eaten with a dot of wasabi.

Bold flavours
Experimenting with new, never tried before flavours, I was then served with a Crispy Fried Lotus Stem. When I heard the term ‘lotus stem’ I wasn’t half sure how I felt about the dish. But from the first bite, I was hooked. The dish had a sweet and spicy flavour with a slightly chewy but crunchy texture.

Madurai Mutton Ghee Roast
For our main course, we were served the Madurai Mutton Ghee Roast, cooked to perfection. The meat was so tender, it just melted in my mouth bursting into so many different flavours all at once.
We ended our delicious spread on a sweet note with a creamy Berrylicious Cheesecake prepared with a forest berries compote and a sprig of fresh mint. It was a perfect balance between sweet and sour with an added bliss of creaminess.
Expanding borders
Priya Paul, Chairperson, ApeejaySurrendra Park Hotels Ltd. said, “I am thrilled that Someplace Else, our iconic bar running successfully for over 27 years is now in Mumbai. Jio World Drive, an outstanding entertainment and lifestyle destination was the right fit for our creative and exciting brand. Nightlife and entertainment is integral to the vision of THE Park hotels and it’s about time we were present in Mumbai, the city that drives entertainment and leisure. It is a place that promises you a good time, every single time!”
