AMPM Designs Revamps a Hyderabad Home into Qbik’s Newest Store
Qbik’s latest outpost in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills is a study in contrasts. Once a private residence, the 3,000-square-foot space has been reimagined by Akash and Poonam Mehta of AMPM Designs into a fashion retail store that leans into the city’s geological and architectural history. The result is a retail environment where the raw, craggy essence of Hyderabad’s rock formations meets a restrained, contemporary sensibility.

From the outset, AMPM Designs approached the project as a dialogue between the city’s landscape and Qbik’s design ethos. “Hyderabad’s rock formations are integral to its identity, and I wanted to bring that into the space,” says Poonam Mehta. This vision manifests in the micro-concrete flooring that extends seamlessly into the walls, textured to mimic stone but smoothed to a tactile finish. The result is a monolithic envelope that evokes the weight and permanence of the city’s caves and fortresses while maintaining the lightness essential for a retail experience.

Originally a home with structural limitations—low ceilings and existing columns—the space required a strategic rethink. Ceilings were stretched and concealed within display systems to maintain focus on Qbik’s signature fusion silhouettes and groom’s wear. Fluid metal racks, suspended from the ceiling, introduce a sense of movement, subtly guiding customers through the space without overwhelming them with visual clutter.

The materiality of the space extends beyond its surfaces to its furnishings, many of which were custom-designed in collaboration with Nitush and Aroosh. A coffee table with a base carved to resemble fractured rock, topped with glass, sits alongside metal-crushed leg poufs with fur accents. Upholstered boucle seating reinforces a monochromatic, textured palette, ensuring the interiors remain cohesive without veering into stark minimalism.

Natural light and greenery play a pivotal role in softening the store’s sculptural interiors. A conservatory-inspired space punctuates the layout, inviting daylight to filter through, creating a shifting interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. The trial room, often an afterthought in retail design, is given equal weight—lined with heritage wallpaper by Kalakaari Haath and a plush, striped carpet runner from Jaipur Rugs, the space is designed to feel as considered as the garments on display.

Rather than relying on surface-level grandeur, Qbik’s Hyderabad store draws its character from contrast and material honesty. Rough-hewn textures meet precise detailing, raw stone elements offset streamlined silhouettes, and natural light works against deep, moody accents. The result is a space that sharpens Qbik’s identity.
