At Raaya by Atmosphere, I learnt the best Maldives trips aren’t always romantic
Back in April 2026, it was my first-ever trip to the Maldives. Honestly? It felt a little bittersweet. Somewhere along the way, we’ve collectively decided that the Maldives is best experienced with someone holding your hand – a significant other, preferably. But isn’t it a bit unfair to wait for love to tick off one of the world’s most beautiful destinations?
I’m so glad I didn’t. It ended up being one of the most memorable trips I’ve taken, and the fact that it wasn’t romantic is exactly what made it so special. You’ll know why when you read further.
The journey began with a two-night stay at OBLU AILAFUSHI before hopping onto a seaplane bound for Raaya by Atmosphere in the breathtaking Raa Atoll, a resort I’d already heard at least ten people rave about before even landing. Forty-five minutes later, I understood the hype.

Home to 167 villas spread across eight categories, Raaya feels different the moment you step foot. It’s greener, quieter and wonderfully immersive, with nature taking centre stage. My Beach Villa with Pool opened straight onto what felt like my own private stretch of island. It had tropical interiors, an oversized plunge pool and a beach so pristine it almost looked unreal. As tempting as the overwater villas are, my biggest piece of advice is – if you’re checking into one of the beach villas, run straight to the beach.

I’m the last person you’ll catch voluntarily waking up before sunrise, but something about Raaya changed that. Every morning, I’d step out just as the sky turned cotton-candy pink, with nothing but powder-soft sand, crystal-clear water and complete silence around me. It was grounding. Sometimes, the best company you can have is yourself.
The culinary game
Those slow mornings naturally led to breakfast at Raaya Life, the resort’s all-day dining venue serving everything from Maldivian and Indian favourites to Asian and European classics. I hadn’t expected Indian food to impress me in the Maldives, but the chefs absolutely delivered.
Dinner, however, belonged to AMPERS&ND. Set right by the beach, it pairs inventive Pan-Asian flavours with handcrafted cocktails, all while the ocean breeze does its thing in the background.
I also got to indulge in the resort’s most unique experience – Seb’s Farm, where you can pre-book a farm-to-table journey by harvesting fresh vegetables straight from the garden before watching them transformed into a hyper-local gourmet dinner later that evening. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

If Italian comfort food is calling your name, The Village serves beautifully executed pastas, risottos and gnocchi alongside thoughtfully curated wines. And if you’re after something different, there’s also MIZĀJ, celebrating vibrant Middle Eastern flavours in an equally beautiful setting.
Experiences you simply can’t miss
If lying on a sunbed all day isn’t your thing, Raaya makes sure you’re never bored.
From an open-air yoga pavilion tucked within lush greenery and a fully equipped gym to mini golf, padel and badminton, there’s plenty to keep you moving. You can also enjoy complimentary snorkelling equipment, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing (subject to a quick competency check), while the house reef snorkelling excursion is a must if you want to witness the Maldives’ underwater magic up close.
The best part? If you’re staying for four nights or longer, many of these experiences are included as part of the Raaya Plan.
One of my favourite afternoons was spent at Artscape, painting a traditional Maldivian dhoni. The workshop draws inspiration from Seb, the resort’s fictional castaway whose adventurous story unfolds through hidden artworks and installations across the island. It turns a simple craft session into a memorable activity, and you leave with a souvenir you’ve actually made yourself.

On my last day, I squeezed in a 45-minute treatment at ELE|NA Ayur Spa & Wellness. Let’s just say I almost fell asleep several times, which, if you’ve ever had a truly good massage, you’ll know is the highest compliment. The trip ended aboard a traditional sunset cruise. Watching the sky melt into shades of gold and peach while surrounded by nothing but endless ocean felt like the perfect end to the experience. And yes, you’ll have enough to look at your camera roll on your flight back!
