At The Fateh Collection’s Khas Mahal, Rajasthan Feels Personal

There are places you visit, and then there are places that slowly become part of your personal map. And for me, Rajasthan has always been the latter. I keep returning, not just for its cinematic landscapes or the romance that seems to hang in the air, but for something harder to articulate. It’s the warmth, the way hospitality here hits different. And the thing about Rajasthan is that it never repeats itself. Each visit feels different, like the land is in conversation with you. My most recent trip to Udaipur was a reminder of exactly that, with The Fateh Collection and its newest, most intimate address yet – Khas Mahal.

Perched against the rolling contours of the Aravallis, Khas Mahal Suites, featuring just 18 suites, feels deeply personal. True to its name (‘Khas’, meaning special), it leans into a kind of quiet luxury that prioritises subtlety over spectacle. While the plunge pool villas cocoon you into complete privacy, the Heritage Chamber Suites open out to soft light and sweeping views, where the sky feels like an extension of your room.

Helmed by the Kelwa Rathore brothers – Anant Rathore, Raghvender Rathore, and Jitender Rathore, every property under the Fateh umbrella carries a sense of home the moment you step in. While Fateh Garh and Fateh Vilas have long been synonymous with grand shindigs destination weddings, Khas Mahal feels like their quieter sibling. Across the collection, you can witness a shared legacy through vintage automobiles, equestrian influences, curated art and an unmistakable imprint of Rajput hospitality.

At Khas Mahal, though, the romance truly begins on the plate. Under the direction of Chef Pankaj Singh, the culinary narrative is rooted in the land, bringing together familiar Rajasthani flavours with a hint of global accents. There’s an emphasis on seasonality and local sourcing, often drawing from within the estate itself. From a welcome drink crafted with delicate kachnar flowers to meals that feel telepathically aligned with your preferences, the experience is both thoughtful and quietly indulgent. Over three days, food became the centrepiece. Whether it was a seven-course tasting menu, a playful “Surprise Me” chef’s table, or a beautifully executed Mewari thali that I’m still thinking about (along with the indulgent post-lunch nap that followed). The setting, in my opinion, plays a huge role. The rooftop lunches overlooking the Aravalli Range, where the light melts from gold to dusk, or the Sky Deck private dining experience, which feels almost cinematic in its intimacy, perfect for a candlelit evening under a sky full of stars.

But what sets The Fateh Collection apart is how it approaches experiences. One moment you’re zip-lining across the landscape, the next you’re trying your hand at archery, taking a vintage car out for a spin, or simply walking through a nearby village, absorbing its everyday poetry. And when it’s time to slow down, the Sansha Spa at Fateh Vilas offers the escape you need. I opted for a multi-vitamin facial before chilling in my private plunge pool, and in that moment, it felt like the purest form of luxury; uncomplicated, quiet, and entirely my own.

What Khas Mahal does so effortlessly is blur the line between a stay and a feeling. You leave with a sense of belonging, already certain you’ll return.
