Chopard’s Enduring Love Affair with Cinema at the 77th Cannes Film Festival

As the 77th Cannes Film Festival (14th – 25th May 2024) approaches, Chopard continues its storied love affair with cinema. An official partner of the festival since 1998, Chopard will be present alongside film actresses and actors throughout the 12-day cinematic extravaganza.

For decades, Chopard has epitomised glamour with its unique Haute Joaillerie creations, adorning the world’s greatest film stars. From Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron to Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, and more, these stars have dazzled on the red carpet, showcasing exquisite pieces crafted by Chopard’s workshops. The journey began in 1997 when Caroline Scheufele met Pierre Viot, then director of the Cannes International Film Festival. While examining the Palme d’Or in Viot’s office, Scheufele was invited to redesign this legendary trophy. Embracing the challenge with enthusiasm, she infused her creativity into one of the film industry’s most coveted awards. The redesigned Palme d’Or was unveiled at the closing ceremony of the 1998 Cannes Festival, retaining the form it holds today.

Since this pivotal moment, Chopard’s workshops have exclusively crafted all the trophies awarded at the Festival’s closing ceremony. The Palme d’Or, with its heart-shaped stem and 19 leaves of Fairmined-certified ethical yellow gold set on an emerald-shaped rock crystal base, symbolizes the enduring partnership between Chopard and the Cannes Film Festival. The Palme d’Or, a testament to Chopard’s artisanal expertise, is crafted in the same workshops as the breathtaking Red Carpet Collection. This year, Caroline Scheufele will unveil 77 jewellery creations inspired by the ‘Contes de Fées’ theme. These fairytale pieces, blending creative designs with exceptional gemstones, will be available to actresses for the iconic staircase ritual at the Palais des Festivals.

Since 1998, Chopard has cultivated exceptional ties with the Cannes Film Festival, being the sole jeweller authorised to craft the Palme d’Or, the most prestigious cinematography award. Redesigned by Caroline Scheufele in 1998, the award was transformed into a precious jewel with 18-carat yellow gold and rock crystal. The 19 leaves of the golden palm appear to undulate in a sea breeze, and the stem is tipped with Chopard’s signature heart. Since 2014, in line with Chopard’s commitment to sustainable luxury, the trophy has been crafted from Fairmined-certified ethical gold. The unique design rests on a rock crystal block shaped like an emerald-cut diamond, whose natural inclusions make it one of a kind.

In addition to its cinematic commitments, Chopard supports emerging international cinema talent through the Trophée Chopard. During an official Festival dinner, a prestigious godmother presents the Trophée Chopard to a promising actress and actor, a distinction that has heralded brilliant careers since its inception in 2001. The 24th edition of the Trophée Chopard will occur on May 17th, attended by Godmother Demi Moore, Caroline Scheufele, Festival President Iris Knobloch, and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux. Celebrating its love for cinema, Caroline Scheufele will host the traditional Chopard soirée on May 21st. The ‘Once Upon a Time’ evening will feature a fairytale setting with numerous surprises, showcasing creations from the Red Carpet Collection and Caroline’s Couture.

Throughout the Cannes fortnight, Chopard will host guests at the Chopard Rooftop on the 7th floor of the Hôtel Martinez, offering a prime location to enjoy the festival’s magic.
