Mercedes-Benz launches the new EQS 4MATIC+ in India

Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz announced its plans to launch three new EVs in India before the end of 2022. True to its word, the German marquee launched its EQS 53 4MATIC+ Electric Sedan on August 24. the new EQS is priced at ₹2.45 crore (ex-showroom, India). While the EQS 53 4MATIC+ will be sold as a CBU (completely built unit), Mercedes-Benz is said to launch a non-AMG version of the EQS, the EQS 580, which will be a locally assembled model.
AMG inspired design
The exterior of the EQS 53 features a smooth aerodynamic design with generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The vehicle does display a handful of AMG-inspired elements like the bespoke black panel front grille with ‘hot-stamped’ chrome vertical struts and a reworked front bumper. The smooth and seamless design continues onto the rear end with the tail lamps connecting via an LED strip. This is contrasted by the front apron in the typical AMG A-wing design, painted in high-gloss black and features chrome trim. The EQS sits on 21 and 22-inch AMG alloy wheels available in Aero and Heritage design.

Sporty elegant ambience 
Continuing the sporty look from the outside, the interiors of the EQS boasts a sporty ambience combined with elegant design. It is dominated by style-defining AMG features. The EQS 53 4MATIC+ debuts Mercedes’ innovative MBUX Hyperscreen in India. The large, curved screen unit extends from pillar-to-pillar, where three screens sit under a glass cover, appearing to merge into one large screen. The driver and front passenger each get one 12.3-inch screen, with a larger 17.7-inch infotainment screen in the centre. A new adaptive software allows MBUX to adapt completely to its user and offer personalised suggestions for various functions.

The AMG seats are fitted with individual graphics and special seat covers in ARTICO man-made leather with microcut microfibre and red contrasting topstitching. Optional Napa leather seat upholstery is also available with AMG-specific seat graphics as well.  In terms of features, the EQS 53 gets equipment like a 64-colour active ambient lighting, a 15-speaker Burmester 3D sound system, Air Control Plus air purifier with HEPA filter and massaging seats.

Battery and performance 
Under the hood, the EQS 53 is equipped with a powerful 400V,  lithium-ion battery with a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh. The vehicle is said to be able to cover 529-586kms on a single charge. With a fast charger, the battery can be charged up to 80 per cent at a speed of up to 200kW in just 32 minutes. The EQS 53 comes with five AMG Dynamic Select driving modes including Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual which adjust the suspension, handling, power delivery and battery management in the vehicle.

The EV is a performance-oriented drive concept with two AMG-specific electric motors, one on each axle. All India specific EQS 53s will come equipped with the Dynamic Plus package as standard. The maximum output with this package increases to up to 761 hp in the Race Start mode with a boost function, wit a maximum motor torque of up to 1020 Nm. With a top speed of 250kph, Mercedes-AMG claims that the EQS 53 can go from 0-100 in 3.4 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz also announced that they will set-up the largest “ultra-fast charging” network, which, the carmaker says, will cover 80 percent of India by the end of 2022. These will include 180kW Ultra Fast DC chargers (over 20), 60kW Fast DC chargers (over 20) and 22kW AC chargers (over 100). The fast charging network will be exclusive to Mercedes-Benz customers, and free for the first year only.
