Summer heat, exposure to the sun, and strong winds may all harm your hair from the start. The end results? Broken hair, split ends, and an unmanageable and unruly mane. The solution is not always to get a haircut, but to adapt your hair care supplies and summertime hair care routine to the weather.
LuxeBook spoke to Savio John Pereira, celebrity hairstylist and artistic director and CEO at Savio John Pereira salon, to gain insights on how to protect and style your hair against the scorching heat!
Best way to protect your hair from the heat
Tip 1: Cover your hair when you step out with a cap, hat or head scarf to protect the hair from the harsh UV rays.
Tip 2: Use a hair oil like olaplex no. 7 serum post hair wash and styling. It protects from the damaging rays of the sun and locks in the natural moisture of the hair.
Tip 3: Change your hair parting occasionally to avoid over exposure of the rays on a certain part of the head.
Tip 4: Use a leave in conditioner (cream/spray) to give your hair that extra hydration on sunny days as the hair can get dry, brittle and frizzy when overexposed to the sunrays.
Have bleached hair? Follow these tips!
According to SJP, bleached or coloured hair requires a little more TLC during the summers.
Tip 1: Use a hydrating hair mask and hot towel once a week if your hair is prelightened, if not then the mask and hot Towel treatment can be done twice a month.
Tip 2: A leave in conditioner post washes is a must as it helps the hair gain the extra hydration it needs.
Tip 3: Try out bond repairing/ hair nourishing treatments (olaplex)
Tip 4: Begin your hair wash with a repair shampoo and a hydrating/nourishing mask.
Summer-y and trendy Hairstyles
SJP recommends using a head scarf to style your hair with crown braids or pigtails. Try some loose messy ponys or buns with claw clips. He also says that French and Dutch braids or any braid styles during the summer season is a hit
Tips to maintaining strong and healthy hair
Tip 1: Avoid excessive shampooing during the week. Shampooing 2/3 times a week is sufficient unless you have a greasy scalp.
Tip 2: Wash your hair post workouts with a gentle shampoo to avoid sweat and sebum build up which overtime will clog the hair pores.
Tip 3: Avoid tight braids and opt for lose braids as the hair turns dry and requires moisture during this season.
Tip 4: Use a hair oil that protects from the sun rays
Tip 5: Cover your hair when you step out as overexposed of the sun can cause colour fadage.
