Rashmika Mandanna on Her Scented Storytelling with Dear Diary
From ruling hearts on the big screen to bottling emotions in a bottle, Rashmika Mandanna unveils her new fragrance label, Dear Diary- a brand that captures memories and turns them into perfumes. Each bottle is infused with homegrown ingredients, personal stories, and emotions, creating a collection that feels like a quiet, comforting hug, and a reflection of the actress’s warmth, honesty, and rooted values.
There wasn’t a single ‘eureka’ moment that inspired her, she says; instead, the idea mulled quietly over the years, nurtured by her fascination with how fragrance can capture fleeting emotions and moments. For Rashmika, scents are a way to hold on to memories she never wants to lose, .and how she wants to share that magic with others, giving them the chance to carry their own intimate stories wherever they go.
Rooted deeply in India, Dear Diary draws from homegrown ingredients like jasmine, pink lotus, sugarcane, and passionfruit. “Scents are the closest thing we have to time travel,” she says, noting that even the smell of incense in a temple or her mother’s body lotion can transport her instantly to a different chapter of her life. As Dear Diary is all set to become a vessel for our emotions and celebrations, we caught up with Rashmika to chat about her new venture and how it all began! Read on.

LuxeBook: What was the moment you knew Dear Diary needed to exist as a fragrance brand?
There wasn’t one single “eureka” moment. It was more like little whispers over the years. I’ve always been drawn to scents. Scents for me become my way of holding on to moments I didn’t want to lose. At some point, I realised I wanted to share that magic with others so that they could carry their own little memories with them too. That’s when Dear Diary stopped being just an idea in my head and became something I knew I had to bring to life.
LuxeBook: You’ve said fragrance is memory. What’s one scent that immediately transports you- and what chapter of your life does it hold?
The smell of incense in a temple instantly makes me feel calm and safe. And my mum’s body lotion, that one is powerful. Even now, if I catch that scent unexpectedly, I have to pause.. I think scents are the closest thing we have to time travel.
LuxeBook: Each Dear Diary perfume feels like a personal essay bottled. Were there any memories too sacred to share?
I think some chapters in our lives are meant to stay between us and our hearts. I haven’t shared every detail from my life, but I’ve shared the feelings- joy, longing, strength, nostalgia. Those emotions found their way into the perfumes, even if the exact stories didn’t. So while you may not know the full picture, you’ll still feel the heartbeat behind it.
LuxeBook: ‘Controversial’ is an unexpected name in a perfume line. What was the story behind its creation- and what do you want people to feel when they wear it?
Controversial is my nod to every time I’ve been misunderstood. It’s for those moments when you want to stand your ground quietly, without becoming hard. It’s strong yet graceful, meant to make you feel like you own your truth, no matter what the noise around you says.

LuxeBook: India is in the DNA of Dear Diary- from jasmine and pink lotus to sugarcane and passionfruit. How important was it to root the brand in homegrown ingredients?
They’re part of my story, but they’re also part of who we are as a country. Using homegrown notes was my way of keeping the brand grounded in where I come from, more like India-inspired.
LuxeBook: Fragrance is deeply personal, yet so universal. You’ve been hands-on with formulation, design, and storytelling. What part of the process challenged or surprised you the most as a first-time founder?
I didn’t realise how hard it would be to describe a feeling in a way that a perfumer could turn into an actual scent. I’d be saying things like, “I want this to smell like a summer evening when the sky is turning gold,” and then we’d test and tweak until it matched what was in my head. It taught me patience, trust, and that sometimes the smallest adjustment changes everything.

LuxeBook: How do you envision Dear Diary evolving? Could we see scented candles, room sprays, or even a line of emotion-based products inspired by moods or memories?
For me, Dear Diary isn’t limited to perfumes; it’s about capturing emotions you can wear, or live with. I’d love to explore other formats one day, whether that’s candles, room fragrances, or something completely unexpected, as long as it stays true to telling stories and connecting to emotions.

LuxeBook: As a public figure turned entrepreneur, what does success look like to you now? Is it numbers, impact, or something more intimate?
Success, for me, is when someone tells me a Dear Diary scent made them feel something- comfort, confidence, joy. I want the scent to feel like a warm hug. Numbers matter for the business, of course, but on a personal level, it’s about connection. If a fragrance can be someone’s quiet companion through a moment in their life, that’s the real win.

We can all relate to the emotions a movie evokes, transporting us to another time. Similarly, a lingering fragrance mingling with your natural scent allows feelings to grow and take shape: just as she aptly notes, ‘the smallest adjustment changes everything”.
At its heart, Dear Diary is about connection. While not every memory or feeling is shared explicitly, the essence of joy, longing, nostalgia, and strength permeates each fragrance. From Controversial, inspired by moments of quiet resilience, to everyday scents that carry the comfort of home, every perfume embodies Rashmika’s philosophy of being raw, honest, and rooted. She envisions expanding beyond perfumes to candles, room sprays, and other emotion-based formats, all while staying true to storytelling through scent.
For Rashmika, success isn’t measured in numbers: it’s in the quiet impact a fragrance can have, the way it makes someone feel comforted, confident, or joyfully nostalgic. In a world full of fleeting trends, Dear Diary reminds us that the real luxury lies in memory, emotion, and authenticity, offering a fragrant space where every wearer can feel seen, embraced, and understood.
