Spy action thrillers to watch after Pathaan

By Schenelle Dsouza
Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the sensation behind Shah Rukh Khan’s latest movie, Pathaan. Released on January 25, the movie marked SRK’s grand return to the silver screen after almost five years (ignoring his cameos in Tubelight, Brahmāstra and Laal Singh Chaddha).
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, Pathaan was one of the most anticipated films of this year, given SRK’s return after Zero in 2018 and the action-packed trailer that kept fans wanting more. The movie broke the box office record, becoming the first ever Bollywood film to earn ₹100 crore at the worldwide box office on the first day itself.

The story focuses on an exiled RAW agent Pathaan aka SRK and ISI agent Rubina (Padukone). The duo decide to join forces to take down Jim (Abraham), a former RAW agent-turned-traitor with plans to spread a deadly lab-generated virus across India at the behest of a Pakistani army general. The spy action thriller was an entertaining watch for all including die-hard SRK fans who might have watched it more than once! But if you’re looking for something new amid the Pathaan fever, check out these spy action thrillers that are just as entertaining.
Argo

Very rarely does one come across a spy action movie based on true events; Argo is one of those. Based on the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, Argo tells the story of a real-life ex-CIA Agent Tony Mendez played by Ben Affleck. In order to rescue a group of six American diplomats, exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez disguises himself as a sci-fi movie producer. For a more realistic portrayal, Mendez decides to collaborate with a real Hollywood crew comprising a make-up artist John Chambers (John Goodman) and producer, Lester Seigel (Alan Arkin). A perfect blend of drama, suspense, and good old action sequences, the movie is quite a thrilling watch.

Alia Bhat delivers another spectacular performance as Sehmat Khan in Raazi. The movie stands out for its fine display of a powerful female presence coupled with an incredible storyline. The movie is based on Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel Calling Sehmat, which accounts the real-life story of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who, upon her father’s request, is married into a family of military officers in Pakistan to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Bhatt takes on the role of the timid but fierce Sehmat, while Vicky Kaushal stars as her husband Iqbal Syed.

No actress does spy thrillers like Angelina Jolie. Remember Mr and Mrs Smith? Salt is another rendition of the actress’ acting prowess, convincing the audience to believe in some of the deepest, darkest conspiracies. Taking on the role of Evelyn Salt, Jolie’s character is a promising CIA agent whose loyalty is put to the test after a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. With no one to believe her, Salt is forced to go on the run using her skills and experience to avoid being captured. In addition to its incredible screenplay, the movie also avoids all irrelevant sub-plots and focuses entirely on Jolie’s character and her storyline –a rarity for action movies.

Putting Tiger Zinda Hai onto this list is only fair given Salman’s cameo in Pathaan. Over the years, the Tiger series has come to be recognised among the best spy-action movies in Bollywood. The story focuses on RAW and ISI agents Tiger and Zoya on a new, dangerous mission involving the rescue of a group of nurses held hostage by a terrorist organisation. The movie is a sequel to the 2012 Ek Tha Tiger which was a decent watch However, Tiger Zinda Hai received much more praise for its storyline and applaudable action sequences for both Khan and Kaif.
