The list of contenders at this year’s Golden Globes Awards was a rather impressive one. From movies and music to tv series, every nomination was a well-deserved one. Picking winners in the TV series category especially proved to be a challenge, given each ones compelling storylines and exceptional acting skills. Nonetheless, here are the winning series of this year’s Golden Globes Awards that are worth a watch.

Despite the disappointing end of Game of Thrones, fans were delighted to get a spin-off centred on the Targaryens. The story of House of Dragons, based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, takes place 200 years prior to the events of GOT. Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans each take on roles of the dysfunctional Targaryens. Upon its release on August 21, the series broke the internet becoming the most-watched HBO series in Europe, with 1.9 million people turning in from the UK alone. Its compelling storyline backed by dramatic settings and titular characters helped the show garner a wide following winning it the title of Best Television Series at the Golden Globes.

Euphoria

One of the most tuned-in series, Euphoriais a coming-of-age series centring high school students in the quaint town of East Highland. Despite the show’s dark and intense themes, it was widely applauded for its portrayal of the unspoken struggles of teenagers today, many of which include drug abuse, sex, gender and orientation, depression and anxiety etc. And while it is a must-watch for many, it is not for the faint of heart. The show is narrated by the unreliable Rue Bennett portrayed by Zendaya who was particularly applauded for her performance, especially in season 2. The cast also includes Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie and Hunter Schafer who showcase similar disturbing yet brilliant performances.

Yellowstone

It’s no surprise that Kevin Costner bagged an award at the Golden Globes for his performance in Yellowstone. A modern Western drama, the series centres on sixth-generation homesteader John Dutton who controls the largest ranch – the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Given the status of the ranch, it’s no surprise that the show is full of devious plots, feuding families and sufficient outlaws. Amid shifting alliances and unsolved murders, Dutton ranch is in constant conflict with its borders — an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park. In addition to Costner, the series also stars names like Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, and Kelsey Asbille.

Abbott Elementary

The late 90s and early 2000s were ruled by some of the best comedic series that won hearts without trying too hard; think Friends, The Office, and Parks and Recreation. Reviving the authenticity of a good workplace, comedy is the hilarious Abbott Elementary. The show focuses on a group of dedicated, passionate teachers accompanied by a slightly tone-deaf principal. The series has all the DNA of a classic workplace comedy – relatable dilemmas, workplace drama, the classic will-they/won’t-they relationship, etc. Amidst these struggles is another set of troubles with diminished budgets that hardly lessen the teachers’ determination to help their students achieve success.

The Bear

While there are more than enough kitchen dramas on reality TV and in the movies, very few drama series manage to capture the audience’s attention. The Bear is one fine example that managed to gain a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The story focuses on a young chef named Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto played by Jeremy Allen White. After the death of a family member, Carmy is forced to take over his family sandwich shop in Chicago, a drastic switch from his previous fine dining career. Struggling to carry a small business, Carmy is crushed between his duties and strained familial relationships. As Carmy fights to transform both the shop and himself, he works alongside a rough-around-the-edges kitchen crew that ultimately reveals itself as his chosen family.

The White Lotus

Mike White’s dark, twisted comedy, The White Lotus hardly needs an introduction. The “vacation but make it dark” theme is one of the reasons the show grabbed eyeballs since its debut season; that and Jennifer Coolidge of course. The series takes place at a luxury resort called The White Lotus, where high-strung staffers host wealthy but deeply mysterious guests. Although a more or less similar plot, the two seasons differ in terms of cast and location. While season one takes place at a Hawaiin resort, season two is set in Sicily. As for the cast, Jennifer Coolidge is the constant we love and adore. The main plot of the series is a relaxing vacation dressed in dark secrets and twisted truths that slowly unveil over the course of a week.

Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Unless you’re living under a rock, you might have already heard about Netflix’s record-breaking original, based on the American serial killer Jeffery Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer was regarded as one of the most notorious serial killers in the United States and was responsible for gruesomely murdering and consuming seventeen innocent boys. Despite being found in questionable situations, the rampant racism in America and failed judicial system played ensured that Dahmer got off scot-free. He was eventually arrested on July 22, 1991, and was sentenced to fifteen terms of life imprisonment. The series, as thrilling as it is, is also utterly gruesome and meant for those with a strong stomach only. Touted as one of Netflix’s biggest releases, Dahmer received an impressive 496 million hours of viewership, with a major fanbase spanning across the globe.
