The big comeback of destination fashion shows in 2022

After two years of online shows, physical runway shows are back in full force. Digital, phydigital and now physical, earlier this year, luxury labels announced shows in far-flung locations. Think extravagant sets, a picturesque locale, vivid lighting and haute couture, we can finally live the glorious experiences associated with a fashion show.

The coming months promise runway spectacles aimed at the news, with new trends creating unique and memorable experiences with couture. Kickstarting the season was Pucci’s Cruise 2023 show on 29th April in Capri, followed by Chanel’s Cruise 2023 showcase in Monte-Carlo on May 5. The most recent was the Louis Vuitton show held on May 12 in San Diego.

With playful prints, vibrant colours, and an element of kitsch; Pucci unveiled the Cruise 2023 collection, ‘La Grotta Azzurra‘ in Capri, Italy. La Grotta Azzurra is an ode to sun and sea-inspired by Emilio Pucci’s favourite Mediterranean escape. Reviving the glamour of the 1960s and ’70s pops of vibrant colours, abstract prints, and flowy silhouettes featuring pleated sundresses, maxis, kaftans and scarves that can be freely layered and combined, characterise the collection. As always known for their signature prints at Pucci, prints were doing the talking.

Held at Monte-Carlo Beach, the CHANEL Cruise 2022/23 takes inspiration from the coastal elegance of the Riviera. The collection captured Monte-Carlo’s unique mix of cosmopolitan elegance and glamour. Creative Director of Chanel Virginie Viard imagines a spirited ode to Monte-Carlo days and nights. From sporty silhouettes that sparkle with rhinestones and fantasy braids shirttails, racquet-shaped chain bags and metallic sneakers to silk twill blouses and long plissé skirts, and tweed and quilted silk jumpsuits the collection features pieces that are quintessentially elegant.

The collection was designed by Nicolas Ghesquière and resonated with the striking architecture of the Salk Institute and the way it frames the setting sun. “I wanted the clothes to be like reflections, a point of contact between light and people,” said Nicolas Ghesquière. Metallics, exaggerated ball gowns, structured silhouettes and fluid draping characterised the collection. Opting for a muted colour palette separates with vibrant prints were tastefully interspersed in the collection breaking the monotony.
