The fashion mood for Autumn/Winter 2026, decoded

2026 came in answering every maximalist’s prayers. Sequins are back. Embroidery is back. Rich colours are making a needed comeback.
While the 2000s were ruled by sequins, delicate embroideries, and bold hues of pinks, blues and reds, the last decade saw the beige-fication of fashion. The world became muted; soft whites and minimal palettes took over, and we can all agree that the world lost a little bit of its sparkle.

Now don’t get me wrong. There’s a certain calm to minimalism. But you can’t convince me that slipping into a good sequinned dress doesn’t instantly brighten your mood, because it definitely does mine.

Fashion is embracing drama again, and I’ve never been more excited. So, on that note, let’s dive into the trends that are set to define Autumn/Winter 2026 in India.

Dark Romantic Dressing

London Fashion Week; Dreaming Eli FW26

Dark romantic dressing is what happens when your wardrobe falls somewhere between Morticia Addams, Practical Magic, and a windswept heroine from Wuthering Heights. Think corsets, black lace, velvet, sheer layers, Victorian-inspired silhouettes, oxblood hues, dramatic sleeves, antique jewellery, and a healthy dose of ‘main character walking through a misty garden at dusk’ vibe.

Fall 2026 runways were filled with black lace, sweeping gowns, and literary silhouettes, while pop culture’s growing fascination with gothic storytelling and dark femininity has only fuelled the trend. For Indian winters, you can throw in a dark-hued trench on top of one of your lace dresses, along with soft curls and cool tone eyes.

Naked Dresses FTW

From MET Gala to fashion weeks, the naked dress has officially graduated into one of 2026’s biggest runway trends. Be it the iconic chainmail dress in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or Carrie Bradshaw’s daring party looks in Sex and the City, the idea of “dressing naked” has always flirted with pop culture. But this year, designers are giving it a sophisticated rewrite. Even at Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2026 show under Matthieu Blazy, sheer layers, iridescent fabrics, delicate lace and whisper-light dresses floated over tonal underpinnings.

Statement Outerwear

In a world where The Devil Wears Prada meets the fashion fantasy of Cruella, statement outerwear is all about letting your jacket do the talking. Instead of blending in, you can add oversized faux fur coats, sculptural trenches, embellished bombers, capes, dramatic leather jackets, and coats so bold they do all the talking.

Designers doubled down on statement-making layers across the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter runways – from exaggerated shoulders and floor-grazing trenches at Saint Laurent to sculptural tailoring at Balenciaga, maximalist textures at Schiaparelli, and leather games at Prada. ‘Cuz your coat is the first thing everyone notices.

Sequinned Everything

Sequinned Everything is exactly what it sounds like. You need to embrace head-to-toe sparkle beyond party season. From slinky dresses and tailored separates to bags, flats and even everyday co-ords, sequins are no longer reserved for New Year’s Eve.

This one feels especially personal because sequinned everything has been a part of my wardrobe ever since I understood fashion. Somewhere along the way, sequins stopped being “too much” and became just enough. It’s giving the unapologetic glamour of Moulin Rouge! and the effortless cool of Euphoria.

The best part? Designers have finally mastered making sparkle wearable. Indian labels like Past Modern, 431-88 by Shweta Kapur, Papa Don’t Preach by Shubhika, Amit Aggarwal, and Nirmooha are reimagining sequins with relaxed silhouettes, clever layering, and handcrafted detailing. Globally, brands like Rabanne (the eternal king of shine), 16Arlington, Rotate Birger Christensen, Coperni, Ashish, and The Attico continue to prove that we love maximalism for a reason.

Polka Dot & Pointed-Toe Heels

Once funnily dubbed the unofficial print of maternity wear, polka dots have pulled off fashion’s biggest rebrand. Thanks to the revival of vintage glamour and the internet’s obsession with retro dressing, the print is back in a big way. From effortless slip dresses to matching co-ords, polka dots have become the cool girl’s answer to florals in 2026 – yes, we’re all Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman.

But if there’s one pairing we predict will dominate even more than polka-dot dresses, it’s polka dots with pointed-toe heels. Pointed pumps have always been the hot girl footwear, but the dots bring a fun personality to it.

The Atheleisure Glow-up

With everyone living their Pilates princess lifestyle, the hottest outfit of 2026 might just be athleisure. You’ve got buttery-soft co-ords, cropped zip-ups, tennis socks, chunky headphones, an iced matcha in hand – and it’s giving Hailey Bieber off-duty. The best part? You no longer have to rely solely on Lululemon or Alo Yoga for the aesthetic. Indian indie labels like BirdEye, Ela Wear, and Mile Collective are serving cute workout wardrobes that will help you combat the pre-workout laze.

Of course, trends come and go faster than your FYP refresh. But the best trend you’ll ever wear is the one that feels YOU. After all, personal style will always outlast a passing trend.
