The Wealthy Beggar, Emily in Paris star Alfie’s new bar

If you’re anything like us, you spent a good chunk of Christmas binge-watching the latest season of Emily in Paris, which dropped on Netflix just before the festive season kicked in full swing. And while some of us have our hearts set on Emily’s wardrobe, others have an undying love for Gabriel. But with season 2 some of us had a newfound crush on Alfie played by actor Lucien Laviscount. A man of many talents, his most recent venture is a newly opened five-star bar. Laviscount has teamed up with restaurateur Zac Lichman and head chef Gareth Drew (formerly at Nobu London and Buddha Bar) to The Wealthy Beggar in Kensel London which offers an intimate venue to enjoy Pan-Asian tapas, cocktails, and more.

Upon entering the bar, you will be delighted at the interiors that look as fashionable as Emily’s endless wardrobe. The bar pairs chandeliers and red velvet seats side-by-side with graffiti-sprawled, exposed brick walls. The low candlelight and vinyl records playing ’70s disco make for a speakeasy cocktail bar atmosphere. The bar list includes several creative concoctions themed around the bar’s name, like Flat Cap, Pick Pocket, Lucky Penny and sparkling wine and brandy-based floral Velvet Hand.

The food menu, overseen by head chef Gareth Drew, also gets in on the act, with an eclectic mix of wealthy and beggar. The wealthy menu boasts options like wagyu tartare; yuzu and caviar; and Langoustine tartare, served with parmesan hijiki tuile, sake bisque foam and truffle miso whipped foie gras. However, the beggar section of the menu includes a selection of sushi maki rolls, dim sum and tacos. But don’t be fooled by the subcategories, the imagination and eccentricity of each of these dishes inspire surprise and delight.

So, the next time you’re in North West London, don’t forget to make a stop at The Wealthy Beggar.
