TV shows to binge watch after Stranger Things

Popular Netflix show Stranger Things has concluded the first volume of season 4. With epic twists and turns, the show had us on the edge of our seat from the very first episode. However, the wait for volume 2 of season 4 has made the lot of us impatient. Here are some epic drama series to watch in the meantime.

Adapted from Anne of Green Gables, Anne with an E follows the story of a young orphaned girl who wants nothing but love and acceptance. After going through multiple abusive orphanages and foster homes, Anne ends up in a home on Prince Edward Island in Canada. While struggling with being accepted for who she is, the young Anne is also burdened with proving her usefulness, debunking the notion that girls aren’t as useful as boys. Fighting obstacles and making her mark, Anne manages to win over everyone in the town with her vibrant spiritedness, including Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert whom she lives with.

You cannot start a conversation about period dramas without mentioning Downton Abbey. A perfect depiction of English aristocracy in the early 1900s, the show follows the story of the Crawleys (the aristocrats) and their servants (the commoners). The show takes off in 1912, right after the sinking of the Titanic, following the Crawleys’ struggle to keep their possessions, especially their estate. The show has everything from class systems and power struggles, to snobby aristocrats and gossiping commoners. Downton Abbey captures both the aristocrats and commoners in equal light, with juicy plotlines that only thicken with time!

Historical dramas have had quite a fan following in the past few years. And Peaky Blinders is at the forefront of this trend. The show follows the story of a group of glorified gangsters in Birmingham, who go by the name “Peaky Blinders”. Compulsive gamblers, they run a horse racing company called Shelby Company Limited named after the Shelby family (the leader of the group Tommy Shelby). If you enjoy period dramas with a dash of action and thick British accents, Peaky Blinders is a must-watch for you.

One of the most popular teen shows of the 90s, That ’70s Show is a popular coming-of-age sitcom about a group of friends trying to make it through their youth. Apart from its lighthearted humour, the show features several 70s pop-culture references like 70s rock music, guest stars from popular shows of that time, along with developments like the cable TV. Unlike most movies and TV shows set in the past, this show is easier to sit through even for those not from that generation, and is full of puns, epic comebacks and great comic timing. If you’re someone who wants a look back at the 70s without the intense plotlines, That ’70s show is an ideal pick.

While this show has been around for a while, if you haven’t gotten down to watching this yet, there’s no better time than now! Quenching your thirst for mystery and thrill, Riverdale, is originally a story from Archie Comics which began in 1941. The story centres around a group of high school students who are shocked by the death of their classmate Jason Blossom. Together they unravel the secrets of Riverdale and Archie and his gang become entangled in dark Riverdale mysteries.

A netflix show Locke and Key is a mystery TV show that is sure to give you goosebumps. The story revolves around three siblings who move into their ancestral home in Massachusetts after their father’s murder. However, soon after, they discover magical keys that lure them into a world of dark magic. The presence of the keys is not of course possible without a demon who wants to use the keys for itself. As the show unravels, the trio has to figure out where the keys came from and send the demon back.

Being a trippy sci-fi series, The OA shares a few common threads with Stranger Things. It follows the story of a missing woman, who,  after seven years, gathers a group of strangers to help her get to another dimension.  Zendaya also makes an appearance in Season 2.

Sharing producers with Stranger Things is the Netflix show, I Am Not Okay With This. And if Eleven as a telekinetic badass in the former, this show also features a telekinetic heroine at the center of its story.This Netflix series follows the story of an awkward teenager, a 17-year-old girl with supernatural powers. Living in a Rust Belt town, she is mourning her father’s recent death and becomes distant from her best friend. She soon befriends Stanley  who becomes her love interest, and the show focuses on her journey navigating the complexities of high school, her father’s recent suicide, and her budding sexuality.
