5 tips to follow while staying at the National Parks of India

Embarking on a journey through India’s national parks promises an unforgettable adventure, filled with the thrill of wildlife sightings and the serenity of nature. To make the most of this experience, meticulous preparation is key. Mr. Yashovardhan Rathore, Director of Jungle Camps India, shares essential tips to ensure your stay in these pristine landscapes is both enjoyable and successful. From booking your safari well in advance to packing smartly for the jungle, and selecting the right guides, these insights will help you navigate the wild with ease. By following these expert recommendations, you’ll enhance your chances of witnessing the majestic beauty of India’s diverse wildlife and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Plan Well Ahead and Book Early (At Least 120 Days)

Safari Permits & Accommodations: Better to book safari permits and accommodations at least 120 days in advance, especially during peak seasons or holidays. If traveling dates are flexible, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (just before or after peak season) when crowds are smaller and availability may be better.

Pack Smart for the Jungle

Packing smartly is equally important. The varying temperatures in central India, from hot days to cool mornings and evenings, necessitate layered clothing. Choose light, breathable layers that can be easily added or removed as needed. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are essential, as well as closed-toe shoes that provide protection from insects and thorns. Equip yourself with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to guard against harmful UV rays, and don’t forget a strong insect repellent to prevent bites and discomfort. To blend in with the natural surroundings, stick to earthy tones like khaki, brown, and green, avoiding bright colours. Bringing binoculars and a camera will also enhance your wildlife viewing experience.

Opt for an Experienced Naturalist

An experienced naturalist can significantly enrich your safari adventure. By opting for a guide with in-depth knowledge of the park’s ecosystem and wildlife behaviour, you’ll gain insights that reveal the hidden secrets of the jungle. Their trained eyes are adept at spotting elusive creatures and interpreting animal tracks, which can make your encounters with wildlife even more rewarding.

Stay 3-4 nights at-least to ensure sightings

To maximise your wildlife sightings, plan to stay for at least 3 to 4 nights. This duration allows you to explore different zones of the park, increasing your chances of encountering a variety of animals such as tigers, leopards, and sloth bears, as well as a diverse array of bird species. Each safari provides a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the park’s offerings.

Opt for multiple safaris and explore different zones

Finally, consider opting for multiple safaris and exploring various zones within the park. For instance, Kanha National Park is divided into four distinct zones—Kanha, Kisla, Mukki, and Sarahi. Each zone is home to unique wildlife and offers distinct opportunities for sightings. By venturing into different zones, you enhance your chances of observing a broader range of species and unique animal behaviours, making your jungle experience all the more captivating.
