Crafting the Perfect Gin Experience

By: Arushi Sakhuja

Sipping on a chill G&T in the summer months is an experience in itself. But, when had from the incorrect glass, it drastically reduces the allure. Imagine being
presented with a pretty looking and Instagram-worthy gin cocktail served in a long stem copa or balloon glass. Your reaction? Sheer joy, excitement and a release of happy hormones simply because you can’t wait to try it. In another case, imagine being served the same cocktail in a highball glass. The impact? Not-so-enticing. And that is why we lay emphasis on the presentation and glass selection for every cocktail, and when it comes to gin, the Copa or Goblet glass tops the charts. The Copa de Balón, or balloon glass, is a traditional Spanish glassware that has gained widespread recognition among gin enthusiasts.

Gin stands out as a versatile and beloved beverage, cherished for its complex flavors and botanical nuances. With more and more people choosing gin as their spirit of choice, the love and demand for this particular spirit is an all time high. However, beyond the selection of gin itself lies another critical choice: the glass in which it’s served. The significance of glassware in enhancing the sensory experience of gin is extremely important. But, unlike many other spirits, gin’s flavor profile is heavily influenced by botanicals, ranging from juniper berries to citrus peels to exotic spices. Each botanical contributes its own distinct character, resulting in a diverse spectrum of flavors and aromas. Therefore, the vessel in which gin is served plays a crucial role in preserving and enhancing
these delicate nuances.

Glassware isn’t merely a vessel for holding liquid; it’s an essential component of the drinking experience. The right glass can enhance aroma, showcase colour, and even affect taste perception. When it comes to gin, a spirit renowned for its nuanced botanical flavors, the choice of glassware becomes even more crucial.
Ravi Kumar, Director of Food and Beverage at Andaz Delhi, believes that selecting the right glassware can significantly enhance the presentation of a drink. “The glass’s design can also impact the strength of aromas, increasing the overall enjoyment of drinking,” he adds. Furthermore, emphasizing the importance of the glass, Pranav and Tushar Mehra, the founders of Mehra Wines, believe that a cocktail glass’s design can impact the temperature and balance of ingredients, guaranteeing a harmonious taste. “By selecting the right glassware, we honor the drink’s craftsmanship and enhance the drinking experience, cultivating a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind each sip.” Therefore, even though the rising cocktail culture has witnessed innovation in terms of new and exciting ingredients, the glass used to serve the drink rarely changes.

Why the copa glass or sorbet?

Among the plethora of options available, there’s one vessel that stands tall, quite literally—the Copa glass. The goblet glass, with its lengthy stem and expansive, rounded shape, is well-suited for holding ample ice and sizable garnishes as per Kumar. Tapering towards the top, it effectively retains the fragrances of the gin and garnishes, allowing for a full juniper aroma with each sip, hence making the gin drinking experience one that you can savour.
Adding to the impact, the founders of Mehra Wines, Pranav and Tushar Mehra, explain that the wide bowl of the goblet glass is crucial for enjoying gin because it lets the aromas rise up gently. “The wide-bowled, tapered design of goblet glasses concentrates gin aromas towards the nose, enhancing perception. When you try our Cambridge Dry Gin or Truffle Gin in a goblet, you get to experience the English Country Garden and Truffle aromas as pronounced when swirled in the goblet.” The wide bowl allows the aromas to waft gently upward, enveloping the drinker in a fragrant embrace. Whether it’s the zesty notes of citrus, the earthy undertones of juniper, or the subtle hints of herbs and spices, each aroma is given the opportunity to shine, adding depth and complexity to the drinking experience. Explaining the process in greater details, Noel Mendes, Food and Beverage Manager at Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai says that the wide bowl of goblet glasses is important for swirling and letting the gin breathe. “The wide bowl of goblet glasses is essential for gin tasting since it facilitates optimal aeration and swirling.”

Another key aspect is the temperature of the Gin, and the Copa Glass helps maintain it. The Mehra’s say that if one holds the glass from the bowl it can make the drink warm which eventually alters the taste as the temperature increases. And who enjoys a warm G&T? We definitely don’t think it’s us! “The temperature is really important when enjoying gin. If it gets too cold, it can hide its special smells and tastes,” emphasizes Kumar. “By holding the glass
by the stem, drinkers avoid transferring body heat to the beverage, ensuring that it remains at the desired serving temperature,” Mendes told Luxebook. The big size of the glass also means you can put in more and bigger ice cubes, which melt more slowly and don’t water down your drink as much.

The stem of the glass is a crucial factor when serving ginbased drinks. Pranav and Tushar Mehra, the founders of Mehra Wines, are of the opinion that the stem should not be too delicate. They believe that “the goblet glasses’ visual appeal enhances the overall drinking experience of gin-based cocktails by presenting the drink in an aesthetically pleasing manner, which contributes to the anticipation and appreciation of the drinking experience.” The goblet glass’s design also makes the drink look fancy, which adds to the overall experience. And finally, the Copa glass’s design also makes it easy to hold, which makes it ideal for social situations where drinks are passed around.

But perhaps the most compelling argument in favor of the Copa glass is its versatility. While it is undeniably synonymous with gin and tonic, its wide bowl and long stem make it equally well-suited for a variety of other gin-based cocktails. From classic concoctions like the Negroni and the Tom Collins to more contemporary creations like the Bramble and the Aviation, the Copa glass can handle them all with grace and elegance.

Apart from its practical attributes, the Copa glass also carries with it a sense of occasion and sophistication. Its graceful silhouette and timeless design evoke images of leisurely evenings spent in elegant surroundings, where every drink is a celebration of craftsmanship and conviviality. The Copa glass elevates the act of drinking to an art form, whether it is enjoyed alone as a moment of quiet reflection or shared with friends in lively conversation. Its presence alone adds an air of elegance and refinement to any occasion.

To conclude, Kumar shares insights from a consumer perspective who have shared that drinking gin from goblet glasses enhances their overall experience. “They appreciate how the wide bowl allows for plenty of ice and garnishes, creating a visually appealing presentation. Moreover, they notice that the tapered
design concentrates the aroma, intensifying the juniper scent with each sip.” In summary, the Copa glass is not just a simple drinking vessel but an essential tool that enhances the overall drinking experience. Its design, practicality, and elegance make it the perfect choice for anyone looking to elevate their drinking
experience.

Whether savoring a classic G&T or exploring the nuances of a craft gin, the perfect glass serves as a vessel for discovery and enjoyment, enhancing every sip along the way. Noel Mendes ends by saying, “A beautifully crafted gin cocktail served in a stylish goblet glass adds to the anticipation and excitement of indulging in the beverage.”
