Shun in a bottle: The art of seasonality with Roku Gin
The gin landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation. A growing number of consumers are gravitating toward premium, craft-led experiences, seeking spirits that not only deliver on taste but also offer authenticity, provenance and artistry. This evolution is being shaped by increasing consumer sophistication, a surge in cocktail culture, and a deepening appreciation for botanicals and craftsmanship. The rise of regionally inspired infusions, micro-distilleries, and gins rooted in a strong sense of place has brought the category into new relevance.
Amid this shift, Japan offers a distinct lens — one that elevates nature and craftsmanship into a way of life. The Japanese view the changing seasons not just as weather patterns, but as sources of energy, symbolism, and inspiration. Spring awakens with delicate cherry blossoms, summer ushers in lush greenery and the soothing presence of teas, autumn arrives with earthy tones and crisp air, and winter settles in with citrus brightness and quiet stillness.
Each season is a sensory experience that shapes daily rituals, culinary traditions, and design choices — and this deep reverence for nature’s rhythm finds expression in everything, including the crafting of spirits. In this context, ingredients are not just functional but seasonal expressions — botanicals that capture the fleeting yet profound essence of a particular time, distilled into flavor. This philosophy invites a more intentional appreciation of beauty, balance, and impermanence.
The Spirit of Shun
This reverence for nature and time lies at the heart of Roku Gin, the distinctive Japanese craft gin from the House of Suntory. Central to Roku is the Japanese concept of Shun — the celebration of seasonal ingredients at their peak of freshness and flavor. In Japan, each season is seen as a source of vitality and inspiration, and Shun captures that fleeting moment when nature offers its best. Roku is not just a spirit, but a harmonious expression of this philosophy, crafted with six carefully selected botanicals, representing the essence of a different season, harvested at their most vibrant, and brought together by skilled Japanese artisans to create a perfectly balanced gin.
Roku means “six” in Japanese, a name reflected in its hexagonal bottle and its six Japanese botanicals—representing a different season, and each harvested at its freshest. Each botanical tells the story of a season, Spring brings soft floral elegance through delicate sakura flowers and leaves. Summer infuses the gin with richness and refinement from sencha and gyokuro teas. Autumn adds warmth and subtle spice through sanshō pepper, and winter rounds off the experience with the crisp citrus brightness of yuzu.
These are delicately balanced with eight traditional gin botanicals and distilled using multiple distillation techniques tailored to each botanical, allowing their unique qualities to shine.
On the nose, Roku reveals elegant aromas of cherry blossom and green tea. On the palate, the gin unfolds with complexity— subtle tea notes, refreshing citrus, a whisper of spice—balanced with traditional gin botanicals. The finish leaves a clean, peppery warmth, thanks to the sanshō. The result is a gin that is not only harmonious in flavor but deeply connected to the passage of time, honoring the essence of each season in a glass.
The Heart of Roku: Distilling Nature, Honouring Tradition
Roku is more than a luxury gin. It reflects Japanese principles— precision, elegance, and harmony—brought together through centuries of craftsmanship. The hexagonal bottle is not just a visual signature; it symbolises the brand’s philosophy: six uniquely Japanese botanicals in perfect balance with four distinct seasons. This pursuit of equilibrium is rooted in the founding principles of the House of Suntory, where gin-making is guided by deep reverence for nature, and a commitment to honoring the vitality of every ingredient.
Crafted using Suntory’s unique distillation and blending techniques, each botanical in Roku is treated with purpose. Botanicals such as sakura flower, gyokuro tea, and yuzu peel are individually distilled to preserve their true essence, allowing them to shine in harmony when brought together. This process comes to life at the Spirits & Liqueurs Atelier at the Osaka Plant, Suntory’s original ‘Dream factory’, established in 1919 this is where artisans continue to experiment with botanicals, refine techniques, and pursue new expressions of flavour. Every bottle of Roku Gin carries the legacy of this place—a quiet blend of tradition, innovation, and Japan’s seasonal celebration in liquid form.
Elegance, Legacy and the Spirit of Japanese Craftsmanship
Roku embodies Japanese modern elegance in every facet. Its design is vivacious yet minimal, alive with vibrant natural energy. It reflects a seamless balance of tradition and innovations – rooted in Japanese aesthetics and refined with cosmopolitan finesse.
This harmony flows from a legacy over a century in the making. Roku’s story begins in 1899 with Shinjiro Torii, the visionary who laid the foundations of modern Japanese spirits.
His mission to introduce Western style liquors to Japanese consumers, shaped a legacy of innovation that would extend across generations. In 1936, the House of Suntory launched Hermes Gin, Japan’s first domestically produced gin. This was followed by landmark introductions: Suntory Gin in 1964 to mark the Tokyo Olympics, Professional Dry Gin in 1981 for bartenders, and Suntory Ice Gin in 1995. The launch of Roku in 2017 marked a new chapter, taking Japanese gin to a global stage.
Behind Roku stands a lineage of pioneers. Torii’s son Keizo Saji, helped cultivate an appreciation for spirits among the Japanese public, while his grandson, Shingo Torii continues to uphold the highest standards of quality and innovation. And it was Kazuyuki Torii, working with Suntory’s R&D and the Spirits & Liqueurs Atelier team, who played a pivotal role in the development of Roku. Together they brough the idea of “Shun n a Bottle” to life. Each generation of The House of Suntory has stayed true to its founding values, while evolving with the times, ensuring Roku is not merely a gin but a liquid expression of Japanese craftsmanship, elegance and enduring spirit.
